How about the Curt Cress Clan?
Good point, i like them a lot. I also should mention the Kristian Schultze Set, Isotope and Back Door, for that matter.

I listed the groups that I'm most familiar/somewhat familiar with.

I've not yet heard most of the groups you've listed, but, I will try to.

JL Ponty but there are so many great ones here. Nucleus, Soft Machine and One shot would rule had they been included.
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Dixie Dregs without question.

Melody, musicianship, and sometimes a touch of humor.

Songs and not mindless shredding. Mind you, I like a bit of mindless shredding on occasion, but I have to have some melody somewhere.

I had to edit the post, I didn't realize that a British slang word starting with the letter 'W' and rhyming with 'Frank' would be starred out ( ****…..etc.) Sorry mods. I've always used the word as a synonym of shred or shredding.

From the list: Blood Sweat & Tears and Bruford's Earthworks.
Outside the list: Soft Machine, Bruford's earlier band and Allan Holdsworth.

Glad there's multiple votes.  My favourites on the list, and they could top my top fave lis, are Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Weather Report (really for the the first two albums in particular).  I also love Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, Lenny White, Donald Byrd (Electric Byrd is a great JRF album, been raving about it for years), Bennie Maupin, and also Placebo and Embryo smongst lots of others -- won't try to think of them all.  A couple particular faves are Janko Nilovic  for Rythmes Contemporains and Mandingo for Mandingo 3 and Scarifice Primeval Rhythm of Life.

Mahavishnu, Return To Forever, Santana, Hancock, Davis ....but I would also mention 2 named as other: If and Nucleus.
even though they got listed as eclectic prog I think Happy the Man fits nicely into fusion and jazz rock.

I've picked Mahavishnu, Colloseum and 4 times Others for Fermata, Blue Effect, Flamengo and (reprehensibly omitted!) Nucleus.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.
