When I think dissonance, the first thing that comes to my mind is still Van der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts. It was the first album I heard with dissonance and it blew my mind and expanded my idea of what music can be. Years after hearing it for the first time, it still strikes me as incredibly well done, not just for opening my mind but also on its own merits.

Good call.  I love the dissonance in Lemmings and the crazy section of Lighthouse Keeper.  Even "Man Erg" which starts out rather plaintive and consonant descends into very effective dissonance leading into that fantastic "I'm just a man and killers, angels, all are these.  Dictators, saviours refugees" crashing ending...I'm gonna have to go listen to that album right now Wink

Other than the bands mentioned here, I think Anata also should be mentioned.  They're a tech-death band which uses a pretty solid amount of dissonance and counterpoint in their work.  The music isn't particularly accessible, so you may have to listen to it a few times to really get whats going on.  They're progressive enough to be listed in the archives, although I wouldn't list that as their primary genre.

Dissonance is the sht. Well, you could start looking into RIO/Avant page, of course. Great bands in this thread too.
My all time favorite metal band, Voivod, is totally dissonant. 
You should look for some post-punk underground like Pere Ubu (dadaist era).
Try   The Locust, Daughters, Maruta, Portal, Pestilence (spheres album), Flourishing and Nightbringer for extreme music. The avant-black metal scene has a lot of dissonant hypnotic riffs too. Check some technical death metal too. The technical thrash band Myopia and Carbonized in the album Screaming Machines  sounds like Voivod.
Oh, I almost forgot of Exploiting Dysfunction by Cephalic Carnage.

But my favorites are into Avant-Jazz, like John Zorn.

I can't believe Axis of Perdition and ot a lesser extent later Blut Aus Nord haven't been mentioned, as far as the most eruditely f**ked-up corner of black metal goes.

When I hear the phrase "beautiful dissonance", I am immediately reminded of Augury's "Oversee the Rebirth"
I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!
