Yeah, it's dumb. Confused

It's not? How isn't it?

I'm also highly skeptical that it's to protect people and not to protect dairy interests.

It's hard to know what the real motivation is.

Interestingly, this practice is fine within the state of Pennsylvania. It was the interstate commerce that was a problem.

I'm annoyed at parents who think that raw cow's milk is some kind of health food. If you're going to be intelligent, you wouldn't be using that source at all. So the motivation behind this is simply stupid.

Now if an adult wants to ingest this, that's on them. The FDA is overstepping their bounds in that case in my opinion.

It's healthier than milk from commercial cows.

Tru Dat but if you're going to go healthy and natural, there are much better ways.

I detest factory farming and I think the FDA is a joke. If they gave two craps about public health, they would severely limit the use of antibiotics in livestock. They FINALLY made a small move in that direction in the last year. But economic interests clearly outweigh science on their agenda.

What exactly do you mean by better ways? If you're talking about not drinking milk at all, then I agree with that.

Well, the human gut is really only designed to handle human milk as an infant. Because we're adaptable, if you keep drinking it, you retain enzymes, etc. But lactose intolerance is a normal part of human development.

Michael Pollan's "Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly Plants" is a darn good place to start. (I'm not a fanboy but he has some good points)

Yeah no disagreements there about the dairy thing. I've heard a lot of anecdotal evidence about raw milk products being easier to digest for lactose intolerant people.

I've read his the Botany of Desire. I'm not really a huge fan of it.

His more mainstream "In Defense of Food" I think is what I read. Pick the shortest one, because the guy has packaged and repackaged about 25 pages of good stuff into several best sellers. One of my pet peeves of modern non-fiction. (Unfortunately some fiction too) Get rid of the padding!!!

Several moms of my kids' friends think the guy is brilliant and go to see him, blah blah blah.

I'm glad I read the one book.

A lot of times books like his derive most of their worth simply from the references. Reading the book piques your interest enough to use the usually very well assembled list of peer reviewed articles which actually give you good information (sometimes).

Obviously I'm not Jay, but I would stay away from soy anything.

Almond products, including the milk, are usually pretty great.

A stupid keyword search in google scholar brought this up as the first result:

Abstract appears to be at least marginally relevant.

Is there really much scientific dispute anymore that feeding animals trash and then pumping them with antibiotics to compensate produces inferior products when compared to feeding animals a healthy diet?

Thanks Pat, I will.  I might try the almond thing, can't lose with nuts.  Though I have no digestive problems with cow milk.  And it's nummy, so I might keep drinking it despite it's downside.

First, that abstract concerns organic, not raw, milk. Second, yes, there is a huge amount of dispute regarding the benefits of organic products, with the bulk of the evidence saying that there is no advantage whatsoever (any benefits are typically found to be linked to other practices). Third, if there is any benefit to the use of unpasteurized milk (not organic), the benefit is extremely unlikely to outweigh the additional risk of infection from the milk. Most people go for raw milk out of an abundance of magical thinking. Dead
