Sorry to hear that, David.  It must be difficult for you, your brother and your mother (and probably your father too, however much you dislike the way he is).  However, I can fully understand why you'd feel like that towards him.  Alcohol is terrible like that.  He must be quite broken inside to have stuck to alcohol for so long.  I think only if you're depressed you drink.  It spirals out of control then.

I don't really know what to suggest though.  Maybe a week holiday or staying over a mate's house for a while may work... just to get you away from that environment.  Of course, sort your family too though, don't make it look like you're running away.
