Caravan 2
Soft Machine 2

In a level of composition, Third easily beats Plump, but I don't like the roughness of Third, I prefer the versions from the 'BBC Sessions' or 'Alive in Paris 1970', both more enjoyable than Third, in my opinion. Plump is very good, not the best. I'll go for sound quality and 'Backwards'.

But Caravan is probably the most popular Canterbury Scene band, particularly amongst people who never really delved into Canterbury Scene music, or don't consider themselves to be fans of the subgenre..

Third against Land of Grey and Pink would probably be close, and I'd bet it'd go to Caravan. But Plump is at best their third most well-known and liked album, going up against what some consider to be one of prog's magnum opuses.

True, but in my experience many people just vote for whatever band they like based on maybe one album they like irregardless of the actual album in question. However, I suspect that that wouldn't happen so much when people make the effort to write in their response rather than just click on a poll option.

OK, you guys jumped the gun there. Technically, there needs to be a clear gap of five votes between albums before a winner is declared. Remember, at the beginning Fugazi was aceing it and could easily have been declared the winner, so just because you're a Caravan fan you don't get to say when the battle is over: it's my thread, so I do that. Just for the future. Unless it's like totally obvious to everyone, which this was not. I'm a little stung that Marillion got kicked aside so quickly, when i think it still could have gone either way, but for the sake of peace and harmony I'll let it go. In future though, be aware of the rule. If I'm not here to declare a winner and it's a clear five-point gap then you can declare victory without me, but please ensure there's no more jumping the gun. Thanks.

As for this one, I know zero about either band (see my "History of Prog Rock" blog) so will abstain and see how this plays out.

Carry on.
Caravanning.
Sorry.
Wink

It is, but games have rules. You can't play Monopoly and just buy hotels everywhere you don't own. There needs to be some sort of agreed limits, otherwise as soon as one album goes ahead it'll be getting declared the winner, which is somewhat pointless. The idea is to have fun, of course, but also to be fair to the two choices and to anyone who hopes to see their album win.

And the OP get's to set the rules.

I'll vote Soft Machine, like both albums a lot but I prefer 3 other Caravan & Third is SM's best, just wish the sound was better.

Caravan 2
Soft Machine 6
