Riverside by far the only I really like

I was thinking about why Riverside were doing so well here.... most obviously, they are a great band; their pedigree and output is beyond reproach in my view... but I think it's also because they don't have much competition amongst the other names here. They would be the choice for fans of the whole Post-Metal sound, besides proggers who don't like prog metal as a genre. I wonder for instance, if Anathema had been included, would their vote have been eroded? Just a thought...

the popularity of Ayreon on the other hand, is quite simply beyond me... Embarrassed

Hi,
I agree Anathema would have been a real challenger

I thought of them, but then again they were never progressive metal and after Judgement, there's barely any metal in there. Same with The Gathering which I love even more than Anathema.

Thanks for participating and discussing. Hug

I like  Anathema too, but in my Judgement, most of the unknown bands in this poll would be an anathema to me. Tongue

I don't see you listening to 90s Anathema, when they were initially death-doom and then slowly got the death metal away. Even the gothic doom Anathema of second half of the 90s and the atmospheric metal of Judgement.

You're also quick to judge. You say you like Ayreon and Dream theater. well, if you do, you should like most bands in this list, theoretically.

Theoretically, I wasn't expecting to like Marillion, based on past experience, but happily, I turned out to be totally wrong, so there's a good chance I'd like many of the unknown bands in your poll too. Thumbs Up

In my judgement, Judgement is Anathema's best album out of the three albums I have in a 3-CD box set.

So funny that you call these bands unknown, when most are some of the most known, successful and beloved in the genre. LOL You could have easily said progressive metal is not your thing and I would have believed you. LOL

I don't really know enough about Anathema to run a poll, although not knowing much about modern prog has never stopped me running a poll before. Tongue

They're only unknown bands to me personally - not to almost everyone else here. Tongue

I only know two bands in this poll - Ayreon & Dream Theater - and they're both favourites of mine, so there's a very  good chance that Progressive Metal IS my thing, without even knowing it. Wacko

More votes than comments again.
Here I naively thought all the voters would express an opinion. I always do that...

Some people would rather avoid the controversy that surrounds writing a comment! LOLWink

Amen to that! I thought Rick would have jumped down your throat, the very moment you posted Opeth! LOL

I haven't asked for a reason for the chosen band. That's optional, but I was hoping voters would post the name of the bands.

I'm not a prog metal fan, but voted Death because I used to like their early albums back when I still listened to metal actively.

This was a very badly justified vote. Thumbs Down
