F the rules. FREE SPEECH!!!

Hi,

Sadly, as you can see here, there are some folks that don't believe in FREE SPEECH and would rather try to find some kind of this or that ... to make them feel that they can "control" the environment.

I always thought that the best control was no control at all! But, even in America, FS is not exactly believed when the media sets out to enhance ... "you're fired" ... as a way to ruin people's lives and make sure that said person is not "competing". At that point, the rules of the "game" are no longer FS, but something that should be addressed sooner or later.

There are indubitably some strange ideas of "free speech" floating around here. LOL

That's good. If even a few people listen then your efforts haven't been for nothing.

Yes that's ironic. Now let's move on. If I had kids I would try to teach them not to tell others what to do and how to think as well. Like any sane parent should. If these imaginary kids responded "but dad, now you just told us what to do and how think yourself!" - I would reply with something like "haha oops yes I guess I did, very clever... but children please remember not to tell others what to do and how to think". I'm more interested in hearing whatever issue you have with this very reasonable advise in itself.

-And regardless of whatever I think about the issues being discussed*, my impression is that MikeEnRegalia is among the better ones at staying on topic and rarely the first to take things personal (I might be wrong, as I usually only check out non-music discussions by mistake. Because they appear to be are about music. Like Propaganda and Politially Incorrect Prog:). I've never noticed Mike being the first to personally attack others either. While many who seem to get "a pass" from you are far, far worse "rulebreakers", and often very unpleasant in their aggressive way of replying.

*we do seem to be among the few left agreeing that freedom of speech is a common good and well worth protecting - even if that freedom can be used to say something we don't personally approve of Shocked.

Sardonic condescenscion ... not a good strategy in any conversation, in my humble opinion.

Let's boil this down to an abstract example ...

Person A says:
"Here's my rules for how I think people should behave: 1. Be polite! 2. ..."

Person B says:
"Be polite!"

Now, which of these persons told others what to do?

Sorry Paul. Embarrassed I certainly hope it didn't distract you from the several thousand albums you listen to every day.

This reminds me of an e-mail I sent some colleagues of mine back in the 1990s. It was full of numbers but with spaces in between to make it look like they could have been words. They spent an hour trying to figure it out, but all I sent them was numbers with spaces in between. Oops. Embarrassed

OK, I know that I don't always cover myself in glory regarding discussion behaviour, but anyway I can't get around the fact that here a guy who told me to f... off and called my a liar in PMs suggests a set of discussion rules starting with with "Be polite" (there's more irony than was visible to the naked eye just looking at this thread). Of course he will say I started it (you can check in the Waters Time Redux thread; on top of that I had sent an admittedly not totally nice PM complaining about having been misinterpreted based on very thin information that he had as I didn't want to continue with OT in that thread), but still...

Looking at my inbox and how the Ukraine discussion went, I do wonder whether here somebody just wants to *portray* himself as genuinely interested in open and constructive exchange - whether this really is his agenda I'm not so sure. I certainly wouldn't expect somebody who has this interest to tell people who come up with thoughts that question his reasoning to f... off.

Now I may be wrong about this; Mike's interest in how (not) to discuss (even when it comes to open and constructive exchange rather than manipulating people into believing something) may be genuine indeed, and at least part of the rules may be an admonition to himself and involve some self reflection. But by and large it doesn't really sound like that, does it? Mike starts by being aware that apparently some people have a problem with him in these discussions, but don't expect him to say sorry or "I was wrong" about anything. Rather another way to read the rules is that he tries to tell others how they get him wrong. He calls these "tips" that he apparently feels qualified to give other people (admittedly using imperative mood in such tips isn't a big issue so I stop going on about this). Well. I guess it may be a mix of both and ultimately I can't tell, but it rubs me up the wrong way. Which is a pity because the thread topic itself is interesting and worthwhile.

So I will add some not necessarily coherent thoughts to this anyway.

(1) A major principle of mine is that we can't convince other people; people can only convince themselves.

(2) This in particular means that if there's any "winner" in open and constructive exchange, it is the person who is able to change their own views. This is a proper achievement of that person, not of the person whose position (or rather parts of it) is adopted, although this person may have helped, to some extent. I've got to say I am often not good at changing my views in discussions. I'm not proud of it. (I do acknowledge at this point arguments and "evidence" Mike and others have presented to underline points of view I don't hold; I do learn from this.)

(3) There is no objective threshold for "insulting" and "becoming personal" in discussions. Something that may not be intended as insult can be seen as insult; potentially something may have been stated as insult unconsciously even if the person who said it was not consciously aware of it. Also even without any bad intentions (conscious or unconscious) on one side there can be good reasons to perceive something as insult on the other side (for example because of cultural differences). Also arguing against an opinion held by somebody else can very easily involve personal attack, potentially in a rather subtle and often unconscious manner. People who have no personal involvement may not normally be the best qualified people to discuss something, but people who are personally involved may react in a personal manner.

(4) Instead of telling others "don't insult, don't become personal, don't take offense", I'd like to ask myself, "what has happened here?" and "how could what I have done have led to another person feeling insulted or personally attacked?" - if I didn't intend it, there is something to learn for me.

(5) Now I have some training and even some fun doing confrontative discussion, so you will not always find me peaceful in such exchange. Also I think that the really good stuff will stand if we try our best to make it fall. So I will sometimes try to make "opponent's" arguments fall (the best way for me to learn), and my own behaviour won't necessarily look like some of the things I said above... and it happens that I get carried away or assess a situation and the tone of somebody else or my own wrongly. But then I give myself the chance to find out where I'm wrong, and this helps to get the most out of it.

Quote
While many who seem to get "a pass" from you are far, far worse "rulebreakers", and often very unpleasant in their aggressive way of replying.
I'm not giving anyone "a pass", just discussing the behaviour of anyone else in particular is not my topic here (and the "rules" to be broken are not mine anyway, they are Mike's, and that's exactly the thing).

I'm a hypocrite, I censor myself all the time. I just thought it was ironic that the only person who has ever sent me a nasty PM in 16 years on this site, decided to start a thread about the need for politeness. The whole thing lacks any kind of integrity.

I understand that I'm missung a lot of context here, so I'll stay away from all of this like I usually do. But

I know there's no objective threshold for "insulting" and "becoming personal" in discussions. But I don't need objective thresholds - most of the time. By and large I trust my own abilities to tell the difference. Like most things in life objective thresholds are non-existing or irrelevant. Personal/not personal is somehow related - or on a scale. Relatively often from a "Your favorite vocalist sings out of tune" to something in the line of "f**k you, idiot" (and how about adding a "I'll break your nose it we'll ever meet")

& we think differently:

The way I see it, if someone provides me with a new perspective that makes me change my mind or think differently, then that person has convinced me. I wouldn't have been changed without that person's input, but probably stayed the same. Something external changed me internally.
