and I'm curious, are you guys prefer Yes than DT because of their influence or because you just prefer the music? |
Speaking as another major DT fan...
I prefer Yes because I feel that their output from "The Yes Album" through "Going for the One" is unparalled in all of prog; that is, I believe that Yes is the greatest prog band.
I remember once in a thread that you said you didn't have any albums released before 1980...is this still the case? If so, you are doing yourself a major disservice.
|
im afraid its not in this case.. what i said is some people explains they prefer earlier bands than newer because of their influences without saying or emphasizing the musicality as you can see from some of the responses to the poll..
And about my album collections, I didnt say bands before 1980 are bad and worse than the bands after 1980, i was just asking about the responses of some people.

I didn't say that you did either. In fact, I didn't really
address anything you said in this thread, I merely asked if you had
pre-1980 prog albums in your collection, as I remembered you saying
this in the past. If I'm mistaken, I apologize. If I'm not,
my original statement that you're missing out holds.

DT better musicians than Yes?????
Wakeman owns Rudess anytime, anywhere.
Bruford is definitely better than Portnoy (in fact there's only Peart who can match him)
Anderson is better than Labrie though I don't love his voice that much
Squire is at least as good as Myung
I would agree that Petrucci is better than Howe.
So it's 3-1 to Yes for me.

Yes all the way for me.... And it's not only a question of technical skills. They really knew how to write songs, even the 20-minute long epics. As to skills, I completely agree on Wakeman and Bruford. Without Squire, there would be no Myung (I wish I could hear him on record... ), and probably no Lee, as much as I love Geddy. I also agree on Anderson's voice (not my favourite, but great all the same and eminently suitable for the band's sound). On the question of Petrucci vs Howe, not being a musician I cannot go into any technical detail, but Howe is undisputedly one hell of a guitarist (note: guitarist, not shredder ), and has got something that Petrucci lacks quite distinctly: emotion.

Dream Theater any day. Although Yes are really good, but Dream Theater do it for me. And because it's such an important thing, I'm 19.
To be honest, I don't understand how age is always a concern with something like this... To my knowledge, Yes have been around for about 35 years... Dream Theater have been around for about 20. It's not like Dream Theater is some new trendy band who've just released their debut single on MTV.
I think they've paid their dues and shouldn't been seen as this group that only young prog fans like anymore.

I agree that Dream Theater shouldn't be regarded as young upstarts who haven't paid their dues - they've put a lot of work in and deserve kudos for that. I just can't relate to them; to me they're just too passionless and over-technical. Please note this is a personal opinion. I'm no musical expert; I just likes what I likes...

I think young people tend to favour metal prog over other types of prog. This is not exclusive but more of a general observation and even knowing myself as a kid, although I tired of it quickly. As a woman once told, "Dream Theater is angry man's music" I think she has a point. Their technical prowess is certainly something to see. Ya, they have talent in spades, but I really do believe that thier composition is a tad weaker than the more polished Yes.
Interesting contrasts though. I would have liked to see them on the same bill as they were for a while touring the States. Yes with Dream Theater. Must have been a interesting show.

I like Yes a lot but I prefer Dream Theater because I listen more to
them. I think Yes is a big Dream Theater influence and DT have taken
advantage of the Yes music to make a different prog in comparison to
the 70s prog

Dream Theater are great, but Yes are one of the 2-3 best bands in the history of rock music. They're really difficult to beat. And now, after six decades of rock music it's so unlikely that someone comes up with such high quality stuff without sounding repetitive and derivative, that I'm sure there won't be never another band able to reach that level.

Dream Theater is very good, but Yes is the greatest band ever. For me, at least.

Yes. Yes is more significant and just a better band than DT. DT is great too.
I agree with Norbet

I don't hear too many similarities in sound....but the influence is obviously there. I prefer Yes hands down and really only can handle DT in small doses. It's just a bit too heavy for me.

Yes.
But I might vote for Dream Theater if that meant I'd lose 20 years...... ...on the other hand I might not!

No offence to its designer, but this is a dumb, pointless poll, and we have had 5214 versions of it.
Yes are a revered, original, classic prog band -- an institution.
DT are a reviled, class-less metal (not prog) band who (like alll their ilk) belong in an institution. They are very popular among those who think that speed and a macho pose (frown for the camera now) is everything (i.e., teen males).
You might as well compare any two almost entirely dissimilar things....

No offense taken, but it is interesting to see how the two groups are viewed at this web site. I am surprised that Yes is as dominate as they are in contrast to DT. As far as the poll being pointless, well I disagree. Not that I love polls, but it's nice to see the political leanings. I notice elsewhere that many feel Camel to be above ELP in stature. Personally I think that notion is dead wrong, but none the less, it gives a feel as to what people lean towards here. That information can be very important when using this web sight as a barometer for opinions.

As far as speed goes yes...........................Composition wise, no contest...........Howe
Petrucci has been influenced by Howe.
