Carey vs Portnoy? If it's Mariah, I rather have her next to me than good Mike, specially after a concert. ugh!
As a drummer, I can't believe Portnoy is winning, as the anti-DT movement grows relentlessly.... But I agree, of course. Carey is a fantastic drummer but he relies on toms too much, at times he can get so annoying... For a more interesting use of all the drum parts, like cymbals (in all kinds) and bass drums and snare, i go with Portnoy......Though, as I said, he's not my favorite drummer.... |
The Toms and other assorted percusion is what mkes Carrey so great! Honestly cymbals get very annoying to me, they lighten up the mood too much, if you catch my drift.

Carey. His tribalesque drumming is the best thing happened with drumart recently. A source of inspiration for myself.
Portnoy is a great showman (just check his solo on Budokan DVD), but Carey is more emotional and intricate

Portnoy's "I never met a fill I didn't like" style of playing gets old after awhile. |

For some reason I thought the title of this poll was "Dana Carvey Vs. Monty Python" and I wondered why it was in the Prog Polls section. Anyway, I'm not familiar with either of these drummers, so I won't vote.

now I did.... I have to say that I like your review specially when it comes to making peace with THE DREAM... ... no, really, I agree with what you say about Portnoy applying some "dosage" in his drumming (he overplayed in the past, I agree), and the whole band seems less.."showing-off" , to use that awful term many people use with the poor DT members.... Even a hateboy couldn't find too much sowing off going on here (I agree there was some in TOT).... I've always liked LA Brie so I don't agree with your visions about his past, though he sounds great now... Myung has always been a key element, so underrated, and in this album we can hear him more clearly! Petrucci as always a master, though adding atmospherics to his style (something that was not his principal strength).... Rudess keeps it safe, though he always has to incroporate some rag-time New-Orleans-saloon piano-bar music in every album DT releases, but as always I like his playing.
A great album. My detailed reviee coming soon! (I just have to defeat the old enemy called procrastination...)

really? Actually Mike is better than Neil these days!!!
Neil had been playing the same dumb ass solo sinse the power window tour.!!
Neil is good but not great anymore he so boring these days.
If i didn't much about drumming ( I am a drummer) I wouldn't say that because that it would make me ass because I was going to territories that I am not familiar at all.
Mike the busiest drummer of the prog/rock world these days.
Everybody want he on their albums form pure progger to prog-metals solo artist.
He reminds me of Buford after his departure in the 70's King Crimson.
He toured and played with:
Gong, National health, Genesis, UK, Roy Harper his solo fusion band and other.!!!
Mike is doing exactly the same thing!!
Niel and Danny aren't even close to that archivemt or maybe never will!!!! |
Just because he gets around a lot more it doesn't make him a better drummer. Neil doesn't like performing very much at all, and prefers to keep to himself and his bandmates. Portnoy is a good drummer, but he just doesn't have the same finesse as Peart, nor the unmatched creativity of Carey. Also, for what it's worth, Peart's solos have changed drastically since Power Windows, and even if they hadn't, they'd still be more refreshing than any of the skin bashing chop-fest solos I've seen Portnoy do.

I don't know much about what Peart likes or not, but his drumming is precise, tight, creative, yet in the last albums, always similar. But he's a master.
Portnoy is everywhere. it's true, that show that at least musicians respect him. Something we could start doing.
Carey is not that innovative. he was once, when he started playing with Tool and probably with AENIMA... but in Lateralus and 10.000 dyas (albums which I like far better than AENIMA), his drumming is.. well, the same. He's different, agreed. But he hasn't changed since the first time, his style remains exactly the same. He may have BEEN innovative, now he's just repeating himself, thoigh with great skills.
I'm a drummer too, BTW.

I have played drums a long time and I think everything Danny Carey does Mike Portnoy could do with ease but everything Mike Portnoy does I doubt Danny Carey could handle.
Carey is good , real good but certainly no Portnoy , If Portnoy was playing in Tool he would all of a sudden become less complex and more refined this is a poll about drummers not bands try to remember that |
I think it works the other way around. A lot of Carey's stuff is very unconventional, if you play drums you should try learning stuff by both and you will find that once you learn a Mike Portnoy song or two the rest come easy but Danny Carey is not like that, it takes so much time, effort and concentration to get the hang of his playing.

From the flames, it is reborn. Since the best Prog Drummer poll came out of the depths again, I remembered this poll and wondered if newbies had input. Or maybe even some of you old timers who never gave this one a vote.
I did vote for Carey. He still amazes me.

You know what? Gavin Harrison. |
Harrison is a completely different type of drummer for me. And I actually prefer his drumming much more over Carey or Portnoy. He has so much style in playing. And he can play just about every style. He has finesse over Portnoy, and a better touch than Carey. But I digress. Perhaps a new poll of Portnoy vs. Carey vs. Harrison?

Carey, after Bruford my favorite drummer. As for those that say Portnoy could play everything Carey does easily (which might be true anyways)... so? Does that really care? Carey has developed a very unique drumming, be it more or less complex than Portnoys, I prefer him for his creativity, not only his technic!

Neil Peart of today? Wow. I wouldn't say that with Neil around. |
He'd be like, "Mike Portnoy owns me". Seriously, and Peart sucks at improv too.

Ummm I've been drumming for 71 years and I say Carey.
From what I've heard in DT, I can't stand Mike Portnoy. Loudness for 77 minutes, incessant double bass, annoying cymbals, even on the quiet songs. Too hyper for me. I haven't listened to any Transatlantic, OSI or Neal Morse with him on it, though.

Ahh, one of my first topics to create, and still Carey is probably my favorite modern prog drummer.
I just got Neal Morse's One, and I cant stand it cause of the drumming. A fill every other fourth measure!?!?!?!? Thats not even music, it's pretensiousness in it's pure essence.

Given the choices, Portnoy gets it rather easily.
