I prefer 70's prog but I beleive that prog metal is the equivalent for the 90's -2000's.Kids identfy to prog metal the same way we did for prog in the 70's.In a way prog metal is keeping the prog torch alive today.
Dream Theater,Edguy,Epica,Nightwish,ect...all good bands ,all popular towards youngsters.

It does depend on the band for me as well. But for me when it comes to Prog Metal is that its hard to come up with a good prog metal album these days (2007). With the exception of some of course. But I like a few. I also am into the Mathmetal and Speed Metal a bit, like Behold...The Arctopus. 40% of the time...illl listen to prog metal

to be honest, i like 3% of prog metal, actually these:
tool albums
orphaned land albums
some dream theater albums
why i dont like other guys?
mostly, vocals aare somehow in cliches, as well as guitars,
sound somehow neoclassical, and concept albums suck in my opinion.
id like to find more prog metal gruops that would appeal to me, they should be without keyboards that are similair to symphonic artists of seventies, without Vai/satriani/iron maiden/petrucci - like guitars, and withour power metal!
prog power metal is something that i d never like to listen
i forget how osi are good, but underrated (in my opinion)

What I don't like are topic and polls that are thinly veiled attempts at bashing a certain genre, band or artist.
None of the posters in this thread really rose to the bait...congrats to you all.

Uhm....I haven't really taken that much part in polls to have noticed that yet, as most of the polls I've seen so far are about the same bands. The 2 I started are more out of curiousity than anything else, even though I did include a band I can't stand on one of the polls (just to see how they stood against what I consider "good"...even if the result stings my heart I can take it). What's amazimg me more and more as this thread progresses is what's actually considered prog metal. I basically started life as a metal head (hahaha), and have been a reviewer and serious music listener for a very long time. I work for a death metal band (one of the pioneers of the genre),and moonlight at a prog record store. All my friends are musicians in various fields, barring 2 (but that's more a testament to Stockholm...you literally trip over good musicians here), and I really do think their jaws would drop open too at what's considered prog in these parts.
(stop reading now if this is too much info)
My boyfriend's in an alternative/proggy-type band that some of you have professed to like, and he just laughed his sweet butt off when I asked him with HUGE eyes if I was insane or was Edguy prog metal. And Iron Maiden. He said "no...that's classic NWOBHM right there". Now I'm really not trying to bash this site in any way, I just wonder if in an attempt to make things constantly fresh, things aren't being stretched beyond reason a little. And I don't mean that in a difference of taste way at all. I'm just trying to figure out where the site's coming from.
EDIT: all that being said, I am, of course, willing to live with all the classifications that you guys dish out (for the sake of hanging out here)...just don't be surprised if every now and then I shake my head and call you all crazy. Good-naturedly, of course.

Love some of it, don't like the rest. A bit more cheesy than other genres, but only a bit - of course, to hear the cheese in the other genres you need to listen to the actual music and not 'the sound of your youth', or 'the sound of older people's youth'
And the cheese can often be quite enjoyable.
BTW, Firefly's making good points here.

Clever words, thanks.
It's good to see there are quite a lot of users thinking that PA is all going pop Maybe it's time to make a community?

Edguy aren't even in the archives, and won't be if I have anything to say about it.Pure power metal band.
Iron Maiden are here in Prog RELATED.Please read the definition for that category, because we aren't saying they are prog.

Except they would be factually incorrect. That there are bands on PA you consider pop has no bearing on the majority of bands that are here, new or old. Among recent additions are anyone from Counter-World Experience to Yang to Tony Williams... pop? I don't think so.

I recently listened to Mandrake which is a really, really good album and IMO at least as prog-related as anything Iron Maiden ever made. But IMO neither of those two bands belongs here.

I mentioned them specifically because there was one (or two) posts that mentioned them by name. I can't see them in this thread anymore, so maybe the poster deleted them. I might have misunderstood, of course, that the person was saying that something like Edguy is more popular than say...Dream Theater...and I probably assumed that prog metal bands were being compared to each other. Iron Maiden....can't remember in what context that was mentioned....but I only threw names around that were already floating here.
But I'm glad it's not actually considered prog so I can stop teasing.
