Aha, a metal n00b! Judging by those bands, I'd like to reccomend mercyful fate and candlemass off the list. Candlemass is heavily black sabbath influenced, and mercyful fate has a lot of iron maiden and judas priest in it.

King Crimson is undoubtedly heavier than anything listed here.
Oh, and I forgot to say, I voted for Metallica. \m/

It was a joke, indeed, sorry! (well, not so sorry, after all, I love playing jokes...)
The fact is that I can't stand people saying that non-metal bands are more metal than metal bands just because of two or three overdriven power chords. I love High Tide and 1970s King Crimson, but I know quite well what Heavy Metal is.

Yeah, King Crimson does have some metal moments (the vroom EP, red the song, LTIA 2, fractured's ending), but I totally agre with you that they aren't really metal and also that they aren't really heavier then all the bands on this list. I mean, king crimson heavier than slayer, suffocation, or massacra? I don't think so!

Exactly.... Whenever I hear Incantation, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, I always trhink of Fripp and his big influence on their sound... "Discipline" is actually the closets to true death-metal you will ever find.... (in that it's DEAD... as BORING...my opinion of course)...
Actually, sometimes names ring true. You know Metallica? Hear "the thing that should not be" and tell me they are not the heaviest thing that was around... such a slow, pounding, heavy riff....
Oh, wait... probably they were influenced by King Crimson....

When I listen to Bathory, Venom, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Helloween I definitely hear King Crimson. I hear even more King Crimson influences in Septic Flesh, On Thorns I Lay, old Darkthrone, Sentenced, and definitely Old Funeral. But then again, Old Funeral were just a bunch of King Crimson wannabes as we all know that Abbath and Varg are major Robert Fripp fanboys.

Define heavy, because I don't know that anyone else thinks that king crimson is heavier then most of these bands. I absolutly adore king crimson, but I don't hear this bone-crunching heavyness, even listening to thrak. You must have a different idea of heavy then me, because metal definitely is not pussy compared to king crimson.

ONLY TWO VOTES FOR METALLICA??!! Im shocked and appalled and am going to immedietly rectify this depressing situation. THREE VOTES! seriously, up to (and kinda sorta maybe but not really including) the Black Album metallica kicked MAJOR a**. And justice for all still reigns on high as one of my all time fav. metal albums.

My vote goes to Metallica, though Judas Priest gets an honorable mention. I enjoyed Black Sabbath when I was in high school (class of '71), but, let's be realistic, as musicians they are lame.

Red. Heaviness is more than chug chug chug. Let me give an example, Fallen Angel, a ballad, is heavier than any metal song. Maybe you see what I mean by heavy now; the title track is of course even heavier, but still.

Yes it is. Metal is pussy because metal bands think that heaviness is chug chug chug.
