first of all I go with Raff that "overrated" usually means "gets lots of acclaim, but I just don't like it". that being said: I never understood all the fuss about Rush. certainly good musicians, though not as good as their fan club tries to make them (this especially refers to the "Peartians" on this forum), but their compositions are a bit dull, in my opinion. not my cup of tea

I know I'm opening myself up to criticism here but I just think you are wrong to suggest that The Flower Kings are over-rated.
I would respectfully suggest that you sit and watch the "Meet The Flower Kings" DVD. This (at the very least)displays superb musicians playing brilliantly composed music.
As someone who grew up with Yes, Genesis, Camel and all the other 70s classic bands, The Flower Kings are, in my opinion the absolute real deal and the best band to emerge in the past 20 years in this genre.
Someone else put it better than I ever could in his review of the DVD I mentioned earlier:
The Flower Kings on this double-disc, live CD, featuring six compositions ("Garden of Dreams" is in two parts, making for a total of seven tracks) offer one of the brightest views yet of a band whose obsession with musical exploration and complex harmonic issues never, ever gets in the way of an honest expression of "song," and the human emotions and narratives within it.
Led by guitarist and vocalist Roine Stolt, this Swedish septet offers a live outing every bit as adventurous as their studio offerings. Stolt's debt to Yes' Jon Anderson and Steve Hackett is still everywhere evident, but his lyrics are not consciously obtuse, and are drenched in life-affirming scenarios.
Musically, the band's reliance on melody and harmony to carry forth their edgier musical explorations is a real blessing; they welcome the listener inside their sound world and make them a part of their sprawling musical narratives. One listen to the opener, "The Truth Will Set You Free," (clocking in at over 31 minutes), or Disc Two's 26-minute-plus closer, "Stardust We Are," proves that good music has no expiration date, and that inspiration is a deep well that knows no prejudices. This is the real stuff: brave, elegant, ambitious and yes, soulful.
Amen

I'm surprised by the amount the Flower Kings have been mentioned if only because they have a lot of detractors anyway and that most of their albums are rated around 3.7.

Well, make it four. Another band that isn't terrible, but they aren't the second coming either.

The Flower Kings Van der Graff Generator
Both of these bands, while very talented musically, suffer in the composition department by invariably letting songs FAR outstay their welcome.

^ Oh my!
Not many of these groups are overrated outside of the prog rock community. I believe the only real prog bands that are hyped to the nth degree outside of core prog fans are Rush and Pink Floyd. I would agree with someone who mentioned earlier that many prog bands are underrated in relation to other more popular groups (say Led Zeppelin)

All a matter of personal opinion, in other words what we don't like that much as opposed to overrated in the true sense of the word, but my vote goes to ELP. I never did get the point of it all, far too overblown and, in truth, not that good, especially live, although I still rate Palmer highly as a drummer and love Lake's voice, especially with KC. I stand prepared for a shedful of abuse!
