Let's say that Prog is a republic, or, better, an academy led by a collective of deans: Rob, Jon, Ian, Fred, the many Steves, etc... If we have to crown a Queen, my vote goes to the late Lindsay Cooper. Of course, a living Queen would be better: then, Laurie Anderson. |

I'm also going to have to throw a li'l love towards Anneke. Maybe not 'the queen', but, an honorable mention.

Hmmm...the contest seem to be between Annie Haslam and Kate Bush, and
then Kate gets my vote. Annie is the better singer of the two, but Kate
Bush is much more versatile being not only singer but also pianist,
songwriter, producer and trendsetter.
And now some nominees: Björk (has all the qualities of Kate Bush, and almost as good too) Sonja Kristina (Curved Air) Anneke van Giersbergen (Gathering) Laurie Anderson Loreena McKennitt (a voice that rivals Annie Haslam, why isn't she on PA?) Marjana (iamthemorning) (just one album so far, but very promising indeed) Also worth mentioning: Tori Amos (I like her, but she's not in the same league as Björk or Kate Bush) Tarja Turunen (Nightwish) And some non-singers: Hiromi Uehara (keyboard virtuoso) Tina Weymouth (has much bigger part in the Talking Heads sound than what she's generally credited for) |

There are moments, but I would agree that "completely" is not always there.
However, Kate Bush is quite independent and has always been her own person and writer, and that is far more progressive than most of the bands that we listen to over here. The only problem is that we do not accept that a woman can do keyboards like Keith or Tony (who the fudge would want to?), and then do their own music. On top of it, her material is not even that boring or commercially repetitive as Genesis became!
I would also suggest that Renate of AD2 is also quite a feminist, however, the band has even made fun of that in "Hijack", which is a bit sad, but I think that Renate knew that what they satirised was the extreme side of it, not the feminist side of it, which she has been fairly vocal about it in many pieces here and there. Their material, sometimes is very strong and quite venomous.
My biggest problem is that it looks like we're looking at these and making a call as if we would want to date that person, and that's sad. We should have a better say about the artist and their work, than just what her body and dress looked like. And yes, the lady from "Earth and Fire" has a very nice voice, but I hardly think that she is better than Kate or Annie. Annie, however is not progressive at all.
I noticed that Dagmar is left out cold! But we could go after Siouxie, Lene Lovitch, Toyah and so many others that did different things ... I guess they were all ugly!

There are plenty of highly admirable women in prog (or prog related), several of whom get mentions here, but for me the one who deserves the title of 'Queen of Prog' is Anne-Marie Helder (aka the ‘Little Red Rock Chick’: solo, Karnataka, Panic Room, Mostly Autumn, Luna Rossa) who is not only a magnificent singer/songwriter, but also plays flute, guitar, keyboards, and percussion.

Kate is more creative. She has a more versatile voice and much more adventurous daring in using it. She has a singularly unique and unusual vision as well as an obsession with quality and detail like no one else in prog, male or female.
Eleven highly distinctive and unusual albums--eight of which are currently in Britain's Top 40. Incredible. Annie has a gorgeous voice. As does Anneke, Rachel, Sonja, Marjana, Sharron Fortnam, Elaine di Falco, Joanne Hogg, Julie Kiss, Petronella Nettermalm, and Carolina Prieto.

The modern "Queen" of Prog has got to be Elaine di Falco.
Caveman Shoestore, (Caveman) Hughstore with Hugh Hopper, Three Mice, Thinking Plague, Combat Astronomy, Yugen, Dave Wiley and Friends, and Empty Days--whatever album Elaine has touched has been blessed by her talents. And she's not just a singer: she's also an accomplished keyboard player.
