Aguirre is so overrated. The custumes are all bad (poor study of the era), the indians don't look like it, the jungle doesn't look like it, the acting is atrocious except for kinsky, the scenes are so wooden, like a pile of statues around the person talking.... Of course, all westerners don't give a damn about a movie that talks about south america as long as it looks "good", it doesn't matter if it's atrociously WRONG from a historical and acting point of view.

Well, it's probably the same people that didn't notice when in the repugnant last Indiana Jones movie Spielberg mixed Pancho Villa (mexico) with quichua (native language of south american indians) with Incas (Peru-they conquered what now is Ecuador, too).

But if one single error was said about some sacrosant event in western civilization, these movies would be condemned.

I haven't seen Aguirre so I won't comment on that, but regarding the Indiana Jones movie... You can't take movies like that seriously on any level - and I'm sure most people don't. It's so over the top in every single way, that you'd be hard-pressed to find any actual facts from it.

hm - the jungle don't look like it? are you aware the movie was shot on location, with local Indians?
anyway, if you ever watched the movie in its original German you'd be aware it is a satire. no-one, simply no-one, dies being pierced by a throwing spear and saying "die langen Pfeile scheinen in Mode zu kommen" ("the long arrows appear to come into fashion"). no, this movie is not to be taken seriously and definitely not as depicting an historical event. if you watched it with that premise it is no surprise at all you don't like it

I am aware of certain things (I have seen the movie in German, as I have Fitzcarraldo and Nosferatu and Cobra Verde, from Herzog). I am also aware that it's always with historical facts of importabnce to our part of the world that satire is done... What I don't like is that there has never been ONE real movie about any of the great deeds in the New World.... Damn, there isn't even a movie about the discovery of the Amazon River! And one of the few ones that deals with a subject related, is a "satire".

Herzog himself has done much better. This movie is a sacred cow, pretty much the King Crimson of movies (terrible analogy, I knowTongue) but I don't like it.

About Indiana Jones, I say the same... Why is always us who you choose to make fun of?

No I haven't seen Tarkovsky's film.

And if I had, and I didn't like...would it be such a crime?

If you didn't like it because it's historically inaccurate and unrealistic, then yes, it would be a crime. Or at least a terrible shame.

I actually think it is the Spaniards that are being made fun of in "Aguirre", not the indigenous Indian people

There are so many historical inaccuracies in movies it's quite hysterical. In no way is South America the only victim of this. Look at the way American (USA) movies often depict post-soviet, iron curtain countries as worthless hellholes where sun never shines, no flowers grow and people suffer terribly. I'm sure the picture holds some truth to it, but it's only half of the picture. They just make sure people never see the other side.

Obviously, it's good to be critical of these things, but if you let it affect too much, there aren't a whole lot of films you can watch without cringing. Wink

Precisely, Jimbo.

Even Schindler's List isn't accurate.  In fact, neither is Das Boot.

Hardly any historical-based films are 100% accurate.  It would not make good viewing otherwise.

I understand all of that. I always defend the art for art's sake. I don't like people who compare books with movies for example and say stupid things like "the book is better than the movie" or vice versa when these are two different arts. I understand artistic license to change history a little bit. I'm just upset that it precisely has to be with my continent's history that westerners don't give a damn...

Really, Aguirre is not even the main reason here. I'm even more pissed off at the ignorance of people who go and see Indiana Jones and leave the theater believing that the Incas and Pancho Villa had something in common. It's like stuff for idiots.

Baldfriede: I'm actually more spaniard than indian, if you say that Aguirre makes fun of spaniards and not indians. It is the same. It's about something that happened in my world.

Aguirre has one truly fantastic shot that expresses all the art that Herzog is capable of doing when the boat is non the river and the camera panes around it with just solitude music on the background... is magnificent... Herzog repeated himself in Nosferatu with an even more magnificent view of the Demeter on the black sea.... alone...

The movie expresses all kind of things, from madness to isolation and many other conceots, OK, I give yoyu that it is interesting. But hardly a masterpiece. On top of the historical problems, we add that wooden characteristic that makes it look not even like theater but like kids' theater.

James: Yes, you're right. I actually bought the album "Nosferatu" from Popol Vuh... which sadly doesn't have a few of the majestic musical moments he composed for the movie (I'm not talking about Wagner or GounodTongue)....

Getting back on topic...

Pi 9/10

Pi is a film about a paranoid (well, not really) mathematician who is certain that Pi is fundamental in understanding the universe. As he continues his research, he attracts all sorts of leeches who wish to use his knowledge for other purposes. In addition to this, he is plagued by terrible headaches that seem to be gradually worsening. One of the most uncomfortable & powerful film experiences I've had - it's one hell of a trip and reinforces Darren Aronofsky's position as one of my favorite directors.

Just to clarify my position on Aguirre, if you read my opinion on Amadeus, which is full of historical errors, I think that movie is almost perfect, if not perfect. I don't care too much about historical accuracy in movies... It's just the fact that it had to be on a subject that no serious director (including Herzog at his best) has ever touched... and anyway, the movie is flawed anyway... slow, dragging, with wooden statues as secondary actors....

I finally got around to watching Slumdog Millionaire to see what all the hype was about. I didn't think it was too great while I was watching it, but for some reason I was overwhelmed with joy when

****SPOILERS****

Jamal and Latika finally got together at the end. I am still completely baffled as to why I was overcome with emotion by this because I felt distant from everything in the movie up to that point. So I'll give the movie a 7/10.

Oi, hide the spoilers better. I already read the sentence before I noticed the spoiler tag. Ouch

I sometimes think we need a real spoiler tag, but people would abuse the hell out of it so then I think better of it.
