They don't provide tracking (you have to pay about $8 for that, they are a small company and can't afford to offer it free), so I'm basically totally in the dark about what is going on.  The post office insists that they would leave a slip if they had tried to deliver it, but won't look for it even though I know for a fact the mailmen often forget to leave a slip.  Here's to hoping I don't loose out on my $17 (or whatever it was).

Hope you get it soon, it's a fantastic album.

I did get it yesterday (after more than 3 weeks!).  It is fantastic.  See my other post for more of my thoughts on it.

Nice, Spock's Beard even (guess I can give them a pass yet again, based on your review).

Well, despite the wink, I was being serious.  Make no mistake though, Wilson's last two albums are nostalgia trips through and through.  That works for me, because he writes so well, and he and his band perform it so well.

Dudes,  I've been listeining to AoM and HFMC for a few weeks.  Tonight I decided to put on Space Revolver.  I hate to say it, but TFK just blows all the side project stuff out of the water.  What a run they had with BitWoA to UtF.  Amazing.

Totally agree, though I do very much enjoy the side projects (with the exception of HFMC, which I don't care for at all).

yeah, space revolver is good, but i really could do without most of the other tunes.  especially monster within,  that song is compressed to hell.
as far as HFMC goes, it was good the first few listens, but gets a bit hairbandish.  as far as AoM goes, the music is great but Nad can be a bit tough to take.

hope you SW comes soon!

I love Monster Within, despite the compression.  I recall Roine saying he used something different on that track to try it out, some kind of compressor I guess, but decided not to use it again (sorry don't recall the details now).  I assume the song you like is I Am The Sun (since you say your enjoy Space Revolver, but could do without most of the other tunes.....there is no song called Space Revolver).

I love Nad's vocals, so I guess that's why that project works for me.  Still not as good as the Kings, of course.

The SW arrived yesterday!  Easily the best thing he's done, even after just one listen.  My only thing with his new solo stuff is that it's like he just decided, "screw it, I'm getting on the retro prog band wagon".  It's not as original and modern as the PTree stuff.........not that that is bad or anything, just something I've noticed.  Very old school prog on this new one, for sure.  I like that this album is more energetic than the last one, as that was my only issue with that......a lot of sleepy sections and songs on that one.  This one mostly just rocks out all the way through.  Anyway, great musicians, great mellotron Wink, great 70's prog vibes throughout.  Good stuff.

I'd recommend it to barney, but I think there is probably too much sax (actually, there is not very much, and it's blended quite well when it is used.......but still).

Glad you got the album.  I think I might pick it up too.  It just seems like a perfect album in length, cover art, song titles etc.

As far as space revolver goes, yeah, I Am the Sun is great.  what's interesting is that i think space revolver really is an experimental album for roine as well as a move forward.  the monster within compression being an example.  all songs seem to be new avenues for the band from pop to hymns to anthems.  i also think material was kind of lacking after the one two punch of stardust and flower power.  Rainmaker seems like a more concise, focused album while Unfold the Future is another experiment.  my opinion is that Space Revolver would be an absolute masterpiece if it was put together the way Banks was, with a main album and then second disc of songs (not necessarily outtakes).  I've heard the song Space Revolver once, don't remember it at all.  also, i can absolutely do without Don't Know What You've Got.  one of the reasons i'm so impressed with HFMC is because his contributions to TFK have been pretty bad!

Space Revolver
1.  I am the Sun pt1
2. Dream on Dreamer
3. Rumblefish
4. Slave to Money
5. I am the Sun pt2

Disc 2:
Monster Within
Chicken Farmer
Underdog
King's Prayer

As far as AoM goes...some days i love Nad, some days i don't.  Heroes and Beacons is a great song.  Love that tony banks keyboard sound :-)

have a good weekend everyone!  hopefully we won't get nuked.   :-)

By the way, hey everyone. I'm always following this thread, just haven't had much to say. I'm more active when I'm listening to TFK or related bands. Haven't been doing that much lately though...

What an incredible evening me and some very good friends shared last night at The Electric Ballroom in London.

The Flower Kings were fantastic.

The Neal Morse band was simply awesome.

The Transatlantic encore was, er, what's beyond "awesome"?

The encore was even elevated from "beyond awesome" by the appearance of a certain Mr Hackett.

The sound was absolutely perfect.

One of the best gigs I've been to in 35 years to be honest.

If you're going to the gig in Wolverhampton tonight, you are in for an amazing time Smile

I'm with you on this darkshade, as that is exactly how I would do it (but I'd just completely eliminate "You Don't Know What You've Got".....probably my least favorite FK tune of all of them).

However, I think it's just fine the way it is.  I really wouldn't call it "experimental" (Unfold certainly can be seen that way though), as it really doesn't contain anything that wasn't on previous albums.  Jonas does add a bit of a jazz touch, but they had that on previous albums (or at least live, like the jam on The Judas Kiss on Alive On Planet Earth).

i'm sorry dark shade, this is wrongWink

i'm just revisiting SR and UtF after a long while and they are just not holding up for me Unhappy  for some reason i prefer SWA-FP, RM, then A+E through Banks.  it's funny how we can all perceive the same band differently.

I had a similar experience with UtF. Love it for a while, then after a break I came back and didn't enjoy it as much. But then I listened to it some time recently, and loved it again.

Apparently, there are two different mixes of UtF. The original does not include the bonus track, and the remaster/"remix" has the bonus track. The noticeable differences are on disc one mostly, particularly during The Truth Will Set You Free and a couple other tracks early on. Found out on the Garden of Dreams forum. Now I need to find the original version because that was the first version I heard. I bought the "remix" not realizing there was one.

yeah, it is me, no doubt...i'm fickle about prog.  i seem to be going down that road of getting tired of my favorite artists.  i cringe at the sounds of pat methany, yes, genesis, neil young lately.  don't know why.  there's really nothing else i want to listen to.  i flirt with punk every once in a while, but it does nothing for me.

the alt. mix of UtF intrigues me.  i really like Truth on meet the flower kings.  whats funny is that i don't mind the jazz jams on UtF which seems to be the main criticism.  ironically, i love A+E too, which is not a popular album.  oh well.  sometimes TFK sounds like absolute cheese to me, other times it's the greatest thing i've ever heard!  so goofy!

btw, saw on youtube someone mention they are seeing TFK in Canada in May, but not with Morse.  so, it looks like a north america tour is in order for TFK, but not with Morse, although morse is slated to play canada in june.  who knows.  i'm saving money to travel to see them if they don't come close.  my friend wants me to drop $75 to see UK in May.  that's way too expensive for them.  $25 maybe, but not $75.
Stardust we are.

Honestly, I'm a pretty big fan of Space Revolver as it is.  I'm probably one of the few, but I kind of like "You Don't Know What You've Got Til It's Gone".

Last night in Wolverhampton was an amazing gig. I'll do a full review in the reviews section later, but specifically ref. The Flower Kings, speaking as a FK novice, it was great to see them play live for the first time, but a little disappointing that they only did 3 songs. I expect anyone who had booked specifically because the Flower Kings were playing wouldn't be too happy with that, although it would have been hard to fit everything in with a 3 band show. Neal Morse only played 4 songs too, both bands had played slightly more songs earlier on the tour so maybe the Transatlantic bit was extended, or maybe earlier shows ran to 4 hours??

I will get the negatives out of the way first - the whole gig was a bit louder than I am used to nowadays, and I felt that this was detrimental especially to The Flower Kings sound. I bought Banks of Eden from the merch stall and listened in the car on the way home, and Numbers sounded a different song to what I had heard on stage. I'm sure turning the volume down a bit would have made the sound clearer. It was more noticeable when Hasse sang, though he did tend to shout sometimes - maybe that was the reason.

Roine played two amazing solos, in the middle of The Truth Will Set You Free, and in Rising the Imperial. He dedicated the former to a heckler/drunk from Romania who engaged him in conversation halfway through the song. I thought Roine handled that very well and the guy didn't disturb us again. Hasse is quite the poser isn't he? He wouldn't look out of place fronting a 70s or 80s metal band!

Anyway, to summarise, enjoyed my first experience of The Flower Kings live, could have been less loud and could have been longer, but as part of a fantastic show it was great. Full review to follow elsewhere.

Alan,

thanks for the review.  yeah, when you get 2 or more prog bands on a bill the number of songs they can play gets cut down dramatically.  the more i think about it, the more i want to just see TFK or TA alone.  now if Morse played in my town, i'd definitely go see him, but i don't want to travel to see him and really don't want to see him on the same bill as TFK.

too bad the sound was too loud.  i'm sure TFK is well rehearsed at this point of the tour, so the music was good.  i do love Hasse on stage...he's a rocker man!  as i get older, i find that sound, etc. bothers me more at shows.  i really have to be in the mood to see a band.  i've never seen tfk live so i'm sure i'd enjoy it no matter what.

i really wish they'd tour more so they could play bigger venues and tighten up their road show.  i'd love to see them in a midsize theater.  an old 70s arena show would be amazing.

thanks again for the review.
Stardust we are.

Aye the Wolverhampton gig was awesome - even if the mix was a little on the high side for the guitars in expense of keyboards which seemingly were mixed down - It was a little on the loud side for me as well - don't like the buzzing in my ears for a few days after - I think that when it gets too loud the music just merges into a cocophany and you lose the subleties of the music...good visual entertainment though - especially Portnoy who is just awesome on the kit.
Neal Morse band - good, though guitarists were concentrating on speed - double hammer -off and shredding - really shown how to play guitar by Stolte - who got the feeling into his solo's and not attempting to show off technical speed.....
OH AND I WAS GOING TO SHOVE THAT SAXOPHONE UP HIS FUNDAMENTAL ORIFICE IF HE'D COME INTO THE AUDIENCE WITH IT..............
