I'll be damned.  Ed Macan, professor of prog at College of the Redwoods in Redwoods California, and composer and player in Hermetic Science is from Detroit Michigan, and graduated from Oakland University, the same college as me.

Is anyone familiar with this band called Pivot?  http://www.myspace.com/pivot  I read a description that said "imagine listening to the band Opeth, take out the growls and there you have it".  Sounds interesting.

I agree. I just happen to find the condescending a****lery of women more irritating that the macho dumbassery of men. The proportions are similar.

I also prefer the manly way of settling arguments; beat the crap out of each other and/or agree to disagree. I can't stand constant cat fighting and back stabbing.

Irish coffee sans cream at half eleven in the morning. I am a font of great ideas. Ah, women troubles. Good times.

Yes, it's not prog really but it;s not pop either, in my opinion.  Just excellent singer-songwriter material by Hammill on the most part.

I wouldn't call it mellow though... I mean lyrically it's pretty damned depressing.

The lyrics to Killer aren't to his usual standard but I actually have grown to them a lot more of late.

House With No Door is an absolutely f**king amazing song. It's not pop, in the sense that the vocal is very, very, very sophisticated, it features noticeable drumming in a soft song (which is surprisingly rare) and the interplay of saxophone with the piano/bass lead is very nice. I've a live version where Hammill semi-yodels some of the lines and it is just Heart

And yes, the lyrics are an exquisite cross of ironic melodrama, serious longing and poetic beauty. I wish I could write that well about depressing things, because depressing things are the only things I ever bloody write about.

Probably a folk song with rock instrumentation, if anything?

Also, the Oxford libraries I can go into are heroically good. I like this very much.
