UK broadcaster Channel 4 has announced it's intention to play Islamic prayer calls daily throughout the festival of Ramadan to 'challenge' those who believe Islam is 'all about terrorism' They admit the move is a 'deliberate act of provocation'

The Independant

This latest attempt to be 'right on' and appeal to a minority group may backfire badly on them.

For starters, I don't really see how all those who currently believe that Islam is 'all about terrorism' (I don't btw) are going to be pursuaded otherwise by extensive covarage of a Muslim festival, including the sound of prayer calls. Typically this mindset of people believe the UK is being 'Islamified' Surely, this C4 initiaitive will serve only to reinforce this misguided view and potentially increase tensions at a time when Islam is clearly back in the firing line after the Woolwich attacks, and the escalation of tensions in Syria.

This, in my opinion could be a god send to the far right in the UK, who will offer this up as 'proof' of a 'liberal conspiracy' to undermine the white population and turn the UK into a 'Sharia state' These lunatics don't need much encouragement at the best of times.

The trouble with the "right on" brigade who clearly run C4 is that they are so terrified of appearing to be in any way intolerant of anyone, they arguably go too far in trying to prove their liberal credentials. Maybe they just need to relax and not try so hard.
I could see the point if the intent was to express solidarity with Muslims (by what I read in the article there has been some anti-Muslim violence going on, I think?) but you're probably correct, it does seem like a bit of a bad idea to use this as a "deliberate act of provocation."  I can just imagine what the reaction would be if, say, MSNBC did this in the US.  People would go crazy. For the record, although I definitely can't affirm the Islamic faith, I do enjoy Muslim music and Middle Eastern music in general, including the Adhan.

Not meaning to sound crass but it really doesn't seem like they're actually doing that much coverage about Ramadan (sunrise/sunset times and a daily prayer broadcast live) - they're just talking a little coverage up a lot... I kind of think it's both nice and a good idea to include normal elements of Islamic faith in regular broadcasting.Beats the f**king royal coverage, you must admit Wink

The BBC's royal butt kissing is awful...

I try to avoid TV news when there's a royal 'event' on. When Kate has that baby you won't hear the end of it.

I'm less bothered about coverage of Ramadan than the dubious reasons given for it.

Yeah, looking messy.

I remember saying on another forum a few years back, that Egypt would end up with the MB in power, and was laughed out of town.

That said it seems Egypt hasn't yet grasped how democracy works. The MB were elected to power, albeit on a very slim margin within a huge population. It seems folk couldn't wait for the next election to kick them out. If the army starts kicking arse there will be trouble. Big trouble.

One of the biggest complaints about Mubarak seemed to be the nosediving economy and falling living standards. I'm sure why the electorate thought that an Islamic government would put economic reform at the top of it's agenda. Funny old world.

I think the army will be issuing a communique in short order.  Morsi is probably out.  At this point a military junta will probably be in control for a while.

Don't you know that Democracy only works properly when the person that you want to be elected is elected otherwise Democracy is sh*te.  Just ask 49% of US voters.

About all this Egyptian crap. I am sick and tired of all the coverage the CBC ( Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ) is giving this nonsense. I can't watch my morning news without being bombarded with their stupid problems. First off, I am a Canadian and what's happening there has no effect on my daily life. I wish the Egyptian Air Force would just hit the compound with a laser guided bomb where the idiot is hiding and that would be the end of it. Second on my list. Nelson Mandella. Sick and tired of hearing about that. I wish he would just kick the bucket. Third. This whistle blower guy is really wearing thin on my nerves. Why doesn't the CIA send in the Navy SEALS and take him out then I wouldn't have to put up with that every morning.

What about the 19 firemen in Arizona. I they're more worthy than some megalomaniac nutcase, a turncoat and a washed out political figure.

If the CBC doesn't clean up their act then I will boycott them. Where will they do then? How now brown cow CBC????

Excuse me now I just missed six minutes of the CBC evening report.

So what's yor point? Maybe the world will ave to use less oil. So what? Remember the oil crisis in the early seventies. Do you honestly think that this is a big deal. At least they got the dinkbrain and a new government is in place ready to make their own f**k ups with their own dinkbrain. How is that going to affect my daily life in Canada? I saw one f**khead Egyptian on the news who emigrated to Canada who asked his boss for time off to go back to his country to help with the fight. Obviously what Canada has done for him is not good enough. Give him a one way ticket back and let him do all the fighting for his country that he wants. But don't come back here buddy. There are so many Canadians who are sick and tired of blood sucking leech immigrants who think for some bizarre reason that we owe them something. f**k them. I served in my country's military and so did my forbearers.

It was Papa bear. And you guys forgot Goldilox. You guys should brush up on your fairy tales.

it's easy for armchair warriors & politicians to think that they are always right about everything when they're not in harm's way.

"What's G12 do, Tommy?"
"Well, it says here it destroys everything but the fillings in their teeth, helps us pay for the war effort."
"Well sh*t, pull that one up."
"Pull up G12 please."
(missle explosion noise).
"Cool...

Ah, when the bad guys fight back. That's pretty much the definition of "war"

Honestly, I also get tired of all the coverage of any news from the Middle East but only because there's never any coverage for anywhere else in American news. It would seem as if only the US and the Middle East existed in the planet if one only watched CNN, MSNBC and FoxNews.

But at least what you mention of Canadian news beats what we have been having here in the US: a few moments of Egypt and all the rest of the time coverage for the Zimmerman trial. Yes, talk about dumbing down the news. At least CBC seems to be more of a "news" organization still.

I never said Goldilox was a bear. Were you saying that to set the record straight because you honestly thought that I thought that Goldilox was bear or just for the sake of a " witty " comeback?  If it was the former then I thank-you for the enlightenment but yeah I have known that Goldilox was young girl since my mother read me the story for the first time on February, 17, 1967.

As for bombing. Yes bombing or the threat of being bombed does solve a lot of problems.

Example of Threat of Being bombed : In Afghanistan When air support is called into a hotspot by an FAC the Brits will send in a Tornado GR 4 and make a couple of menacing low passes  just to show the baddies what's in store for them  if they choose to keep it up. It works 100% of the time and the Brits save on ordnance and the baddies f**k off ( for a while ). I'll have to say if it happens to be an American A-10 Warthog that is available it will go in and remove the problem on first pass by whatever means necessary and the threat no longer exists. They would not extend the British courtesy of sort of saying " please f**k off or we will have no option but to bomb you". So both methods work. I prefer the American method because the enemy does not live to fight another day.

Yeah - the joke was forebears vs Goldilocks and the Three bears (4 bears / 3 bears geddit?). You said we forgot Goldilocks - we hadn't - she wasn't a f*cking bear (though maybe she did, but that wasn't mentioned in the story) so there was no reason to mention her at all.

Yep - works perfectly - we cleared up that little skirmish in no time using those tactics. 174 frickin' years and we've learnt nothing.
