Rush have tried different things. So have Yes and Genesis. Some bands change more gradually than others. For some bands like Echolyn or the Flower Kings it's a slower evolution in sound but with Rush or Porcupine Tree they change from album to album sometimes. I'd say that the Flower Kings sound evolves slower than some bands. They seem to have a very similar sound or template on most of their albums. Yeah they do change things up a bit but it's not as obvious as some bands and imo it's more subtle. It doesn't really matter much anyway because they are a great band.

Rush had a very logical flow from their early days until their hiatus.....now they seem to be reaching back to their glory days (to good effect, I would say).

I have every Porcupine Tree album, and I honestly don't think they changed or evolved much at all, aside from making things a bit heavier (but even then, heaviness was used even in Up The Downstair, just not quite as much as in albums like In Absentia).

My point was simply that, fans are never really satisfied.  If a band never changes at all, fans complain.  If a band changes their sound, fans complain.  That's all I was saying.  I think the Flower Kings have changed a lot myself, but to someone who doesn't follow them as closely as I have, it might not be that apparent.  The two most recent albums are not bad by any means, just not anywhere close to the level of their earlier stuff.  I love Paradox Hotel (minus the boring epic) and I REALLY love TSoNE.  Those are, so far, the only albums since Unfold that I consider truly great albums (for different reasons, actually).

I'm definitely enjoying DR a lot more than Banks, though I'd still say it doesn't come close to albums like Stardust, Flower Power, Unfold, etc.

Just got back from a fantastic The Flower Kings Concert. Smile

Please tell us more.  What were the early songs they were going to revive?  Still waiting for those Europe tour dates, apparently April 2014 is when it will happen.

The Flower Kings are always good (on every album), Graveland and Magma maybe too.
I've created an atmosphere where I'm friend first, boss second. Probably entertainer third.

Some more information about the concert, well the opener was Daniel Gildenlöw & friends. The Flower Kings Set list was kind of a mixed bag with songs from the two latest albums and some songs from the 90's. Roine Stolt said that next year is the 20th anniversary for The Flower Kings. I can also say that I stood at a good place, right next to the stairs that they had to walk down to get to the stage. Yes Daniel Gildenlöw & friends and the whole Flower Kings band was just a few centimeters away from me when they walked to the stage. Smile Some people I saw in the audience was Nad Sylvan the vocalist for Agents of Mercy and for Steve Hackett's band and Tomas Eriksson the bassist for Kaipa in the 70's.

Well - Just decided to listen to the Transatlantic promo on u-tube.
H'm title is spelt wrong - fourth letter should be a "t".....
Not even a Stolt solo can save such an insipid pile....
Lets hope the longer tracks aren't as such lame and sell-out rubbish!!!

Sorry looks like I confused you. Steve Hackett wasn't there, only Nad Sylvan. Sorry don't remember the whole setlist because there was too many long songs there and I am kind of new to The Flower Kings.

have you ever seen the film "Amadeus?" It reminds me of the part where the king tells Mozart his compositions have "too many notes."

^indeed!

When Barney and I went to see The Flower Kings earlier this year their set consisted of 3 songs, Numbers, The Truth Will Set You Free and Rising The Imperial.  With a bit of improvisation thrown in the set was about 1 hr 5 mins.  Not bad for 3 "songs" Wink.

I'd love to see them play something like The Man Who Walked With Kings or Theme For A Hero live.  I guess this is why I love Interstellar Visitations so much.  I guess asking for a full rendition of Garden of Dreams is futile........
