Judas Priest- Sad Wings Of Destiny
Black Sabbath- Volume 4
Iron Maiden- The Number Of The Beast
Motorhead- Ace Of Spades
Saxon- Wheels Of Steel
Metallica- Master Of Puppets
Thin Lizzy- Live and Dangerous
UFO- Strangers In The Night
Rainbow- Rising
Van Halen- Van Halen

Honourable mention to: AC/DC- Back In Black, Helloween- Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1 (part 2 is weaker, imho), Scorpions- Blackout, Megadeth- Rust In Peace, Whitesnake- 1987, Samson- Shock Tactics, Def Leppard- Hysteria, Dio- Holy Diver, Angel Witch- Angel Witch, Ozzy Osbourne- Blizzard Of Oz.

I discount Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep- as many previous posters have suggested they aren't quite heavy metal, imho of course. Also restricted myself to one album per band, else multiple Priest, Sabbath and Maiden albums would have appeared...

Here's my top 15, because I'm not sure if all my fave's are considered to be heavy metal.

  1. Meliah Rage - Solitary Solitude
  2. Sepultura - Arise
  3. Tourniquet - Psycho Surgery
  4. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
  5. Alice Cooper - Killer
  6. Anathema - Alternative 4
  7. Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
  8. Skyclad - A Burnt Offering For The Bone Idol
  9. Blue Öyster Cult - Fire Of Unknown Origin
  10. Sepultura - Chaos A.D.
  11. Thought Industry - Songs For Insects
  12. Satan - Suspended Sentence
  13. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
  14. Slayer - Reign In Blood
  15. Moonspell - Irreligious

Sadly I have to omit wonderful albums by Judas Priest (Sad Wings), Fear Of God (Within The Veil), Carcass (Necroticism) and Tiamat (Wildhoney).

I still enjoy the above mentioned albums. IMO varying between listening to prog, metal and classical music keeps it still interesting for me.
I'm running still,
I shall until,
one day I hope that I'll arrive

Ermm Most of what's listed here I've never heard.

My "metal" (perhaps more hard rock) tastes, past and present:

Younger days (rarely listened to for the past quarter-century)
Alice Cooper
Black Sabbath
Blue Oyster Cult
Rainbow
Queen -- Sheer Heart Attack

Still Dig:
Deep Purple
Uriah Heep  (?)
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen (with D. L. Roth)

Fusion fave Steve Morse (and, arguably, recent Jeff beck) approaches metal at times, as does latter-day King Crimson -- great stuff!

I've dug lots of ACDC riffs in the past, but the vocals really put me off (I don't like screamers).

Besides the odd song here and there (such as Metallica's "Enter Sandman"), that's really it for me, as far as metal goes. I just can't take it when it gets too fast, or when the lyrics are relentlessly dark. (Lyrics mean a lot to me -- if I can't relate to them, I won't really get into the band.)

I guess, overall, I'd rather hang out and sing along with elves and hobbits, instead of orcs and ogres. Wink

(Though many here would no doubt find it "boring," I like lots of traditional music -- a vocalist like Kate Rusby is about as far from the metal end of the musical spectrum as it gets, I suppose.)

The more predictable list

Note: I consider "Heavy Metal" to be NWOBHM and that timeframe (roughly 1976-1986, although more specifically 1979-1983), as the term was used posthumously to describe 1970s "Hard Rock" bands...;

1. AC/DC - Back in Black
2. Motorhead - Ace of Spades
3. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
4. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
5. Van Halen - Van Halen
6. Riot - Narita
7. Skid Row - Skid Row
8. Diamond Head - Living on Borrowed Time
9. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
10. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny

The Underdogs (albums that should have been much, much bigger)

1. Samson - Head On
2. Raven - Wiped Out (although "All for One" has a more commercial sound, and the three "BIG" songs; "Mind Over Metal", "All For One" and "Run Silent Run Deep").
3. Angelwitch - Angelwitch
4. Slayer - Reign in Blood (I know, every metal fan these days raves about it, but NWOBHM fans always overlook Slayer!)
5. Motorhead - Overkill
6. Tank - Filth Hounds of Hades
7. Venom - At War With Satan
8. Lawnmower Death - Oooh Crikey, It's Lawnmower Death
9. Napalm Death - Scum
10. K-Tel Axe Attack Vol 1 (I know, I cheated - but every headbanger should own a copy! Add Speed Kills Vol 1, and you've got an even more complete picture).

Weird, I've just been going through a big nostalgia trip of late 70s and early 80s hard rock and metal, largely prompted by reading John Tucker's patchy but interesting trawl through that period called The New Wave of British Heavy Metal: Suzi Smiled which prompted me to listen to Lars Ulrich's excellent compilation of that period and dig out a whole host of old metal lps I'd last listened to when I was about 14. Guess it's a midlife crisis thing but damn I enjoyed sticking on Screaming for Vengeance and High and Dry and Ready and Willing. I rediscovered songs that I adored then and even now I happily find that I still like the melodies in some of them (though admittedly some are just juvenile tripe, badly played, badly produced and badly written). But for what it's worth here's the top 10 of my listening from that golden (or at least gold-foil covered) age (in no particular order):

1 Michael Schenker Group - Michael Schenker Group
2. Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
3. Def Leppard - High and Dry
4. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
5. AC/DC - Powerage
6. Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast
7. Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
8. Angel Witch - Angel Witch
9. Diamond Head - Borrowed Time
10. Michael Schenker Group - MSG (2nd album)

Just for the oldies it's also worth revisiting a few lost "treasures" from that period - I'd refer you first to the band Shiva - an almost good Rush clone that if you're a fan of NWOBHM are worth hearing, their "Firedance" album is fun. Also Raven's "Rock Until You Drop" a great fun album, Tank's punk/metal melange "Filth Hounds of Hades, even Saxon (bless 'em), their "Wheels of Steel" album is a good laugh.
If you really want to delve deeper then try to find some stuff by Trespass, the silly and faintly hilarious Witchfinder General and Blitzkrieg who had some good stuff. And if you're really curious have a look at http://www.nwobhm.com/ which is a good encyclopedia of bands from those halcyon schooldays when you could start a heavy metal band with your classmates in your bedroom on a Sunday, release a Sabs rip-off on Tuesday on your own label and have it played by Neal Kay at the Soundhouse the following weekend. Funny times.

I have that album on vinyl:

Several euphemisms used there Just...

"an almost good Rush clone"  = "really quite awful"

"their "Firedance" album is fun" = only fun somehow means "crap"...
LOL
I seem to remember the vocalist was appalling..

I might dig it out the attic tomorrow and give it a spin....

Just noticed you reference Angel Witch - they were quite possibly the worst band I ever saw live.... their "classic" Angelwitch track seemed to have the inspired chorus :" you're an Angelwitch, you're an Angelwitch" if I remember correctly..

..those were the days, eh?Wink

Oh Tony, you saw Kevin Heybourne and the Witch live? Yes, they were horrible live.. I've got several tapes from their gigs in England (Blackpool I think) and they sound like crap...   too bad.

Raven should have done much better than they did - great band.

Their debut,"Saxon", "Strong Arm of the Law", "Denim and Leather" and "The Eagle has Landed (live)" are metal classics too - Saxon were superb live - great entertainment!

Witchfinder General - now you had to have a sense of humour to appreciate them... pity they didn't. Tongue

Anyone even vaguely familiar with Metallica's "Master of Puppets" album should listen to "Rainbow Warrior" by Bleak House (you won't be able to afford a copy of the single). Is it just me, or does it sound a little bit like the last track on side 1 of MoP? LOL

Oh, and DON'T listen to Quartz's cover of "Nantucket Sleighride" (at the same link) - it sucks worse than a sucking thing in Suck St., Sucksville.

/edit: I didn't spot until now that this thread had been resurrected - interesting to see changes in personal HM top 10s Smile

Angel Witch's debut I rather enjoy, but the title track is pretty dumb stuff. I think it's fair to say Rush and Black Sabbath were a big influence on their sound.

Another rather good NWOBHM album I have is Witchfynde's 'Give 'Em Hell'. This album's biggest drawback is the production- it sounds like every track was recorded somewhere completely different, on my CD version at least. However, the song 'Leavin' Nadir' is excellent, imho. I have an excellent 3-cd box set of various NWOBHM also-rans called 'Lightning To The Nations'- some of the names mentioned here are on that, I believe.

I had Quartz's debut and 'Live Quartz' on a 2cd a while back- not very good imo, despite the producer credit Tony Iommi got.

Saxon were on some show yesterday with Harvey Goldsmith trying to resurrect the career of various hasbeens- pretty desparate really. I didn't see it as I was watching the Life On Mars finale but there was a big article on it in Classic Rock. I still think 'Wheels Of Steel' is one of THE great NWOBHM albums, with 'Strong Arm Of The Law' and 'Denim and Leather' being not far behind. They lose it for me with 'The Power And The Glory' which didn't quite have the songs of the earlier ones, imho of course.

That chorus of "You're an Angel Witch, Youuuuu're an Angel Witch" is just too good to resist!! You can't help enjoying the sheer thick-headedness of it.
Tony, you should dig out the Shiva album. Yup the singer's awful but it doesn't half bring back some memories. Sometimes not in a good way admittedly.
But hell, what a nostalgia trip! It was such a great time with all this punk-ethic, homebrew metal being released all the time., The birth of Kerrang! magazine and how seriously me and my mates took it all. Yes the music's largely sh*te but it such a good laugh to listen to it all again.
And in there are a few gems: Digging out MSG's first album and hearing Lost Horizons or On and On from the second album or Love to Love by UFO or Take These Chains by Judas Priest, is just brilliant. After 20 odd years they're still great examples of melodic rock at its best. Go on, give it a go, raid the attic, drag out some UFO, Angel Witch, Shiva, Tygers of Pan Tang, Def Leppard, Sweet Savage, Samson, Diamond Head et al, grab a can of the cheapest, foulest lager you can get, spark up a Lambert & Butler (if they still exist), chow down on an Aztec bar and there you go -   instant teen years in a box. LOL

Some really fantastic bands and albums mentioned here (too many to go through), many of which suffer the prog rock syndrome.

I refer to genres, heavy metal, heavy rock, rock, NWOBHM, and god forgive me prog metal. Who is what and where do they fit...another 100 years of discussion and fallout.

Long live music, in which ever category it encompasses.
