The mentality that deems all guns basically the same has to change. And guys on the FBI watchlist maybe shouldn't be allowed to buy guns, especially, oh I don't know, ones favored by the Russian army.

You're thinking of the AK-47, the AR-15 is the "civilian" version of the M16 made by Colt for the US Marines...

Exactly. And that's exactly what would replace a musket in a "well regulated militia" if you ever wanted to have another civil war.

True. It is a young and still socially unstable culture. Of course the immediate response is usually in the family of "Y'know he'd have been able to do a lot of damage with a couple handguns and a knife, too", which is rapidly becoming an idiotic and indefensible position.
Another thing that bothered me (granted the dude was a moron, so..) is the utter cowardice required to spray a room full of unarmed and unsuspecting people with a machine gun. How that shows anything but cowardice is beyond me. If I were a terrorist I'd be red with embarrassment over this idiot. |

A common argument from weapon fetishists is "the AR-15 is just a rifle". Because the entire gun world has started calling it a "modern sporting rifle". Yes, because of course you need to be able to fire 40 rounds per minute (if your trigger finger can manage) to kill a deer (people who hunt for "sport" also deserve all my scorn and repulsion but that is of course another matter)...

Speaking of knives I heard a British MP was stabbed earlier. Not US politics but whatever. |

Shot several times and stabbed. Been linked to far right party Britain First, which advocates against multiculturalism and immigration: https://www.britainfirst.org/
Apparently the attacker shouted out "Britain First" in the attack (which brings to mind what IS say in attacks in a strange way). Edited by Logan - June 16 2016 at 12:42 |

Jo Cox has since died from her injuries. Condolences to her family. It is not possible to say whether the shout was "Britain first" or "Britain First" since it is impossible to tell. He could have simply objected to Mrs Cox's pro-Europe stance and was saying "[put] Britain first" as opposed to proclaiming any neo-fascist sympathies.

I heard that too, although I'm not sure if there is a connection between the British Fascist party or not. |

Very sad to hear. And, yes, we don't know if there is party affiliation or sympathies, and I should not have capitalized "first". As the inquiry proceeds, more will become known. |

One newspaper here in the UK was quick to state that he did shout 'Britain first' and that was a right wing tabloid newspaper, who I would expect if anything to try and 'distract' from any possible right leaning motivation in the killer. That said, the paper in question, The Daily Mail is not 'far right' Just centre right and 'lazy racist' Anyway, whatever the motivation it's terribly sad. She was clearly one of the good people in politics. RIP. |

Well I know enough about the Daily Mail to know that one could find their journalistic integrity questionable, to put it mildly. I don't know if the Britain First link has been verified, but I did see a claim that the shooter was a subscriber to a far-right nationalist magazine (S.A.Patriot), but I haven't seen any verification for that from a reputable source. |

Joanne Cox's death is tragic. A young, lovely woman who stood up for human rights and labor, evidently. If she was promoting a more humane and diverse Britain, she died a hero.
More rightist violence, showing the deeply cowardly and infantile minds we're dealing with. Terrible. |

What's funny to me, not ha-ha funny but irony funny, are the same people who refuse to have honest discussions about gun laws in this country, are many of the same people now clamoring to save the world (my hyperbole) from alligators because of that child's tragic death at the Disney park. They will always casually dismiss every gun death, every mass shooting, every suicide and accidental killing as the "price of living in a free society like America." But one family chooses to do something counter to warning signs in the area, and they lose their child as a horrifying result, and now many of those same gun people are saying how we need to better control nature, better warn tourists, better...everything. Disney must pay!!!! We are not a well nation. ![]() |

And many are the same folks who are passionate defenders of human fetus when it comes to the abortion debate, but also support the death penalty, mandatory sentencing laws, cutting off immigration and eliminating Obamacare after that fetus is born. Sanctity of life indeed. Never forget though that at the heart of the gun debate is a deep (and justified) mistrust of our own government. And given the long, long history of Feds running headlong down a slippery slope any time civil liberties or constitutional rights are legally restricted, that paranoia is to a certain extent justified. |

Fair. But they're also the same people who say "if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about" when it comes to police stopping you or other law enforcement exercising their duties...until it happens to piss them off directly. |

Able to fire three shots in a relatively short space of time, the gun he used was not home-made, it was described by one eye-witness as "an old fashioned looking". Just because we have strict gun control there is no need for unnecessary speculation on the weapon's origin, there are a number of reasons why he could have obtained and owned a hand gun, especially an antique one.
