^ Oh yes. Petrucci has more emotion than Maiden's players. That Hollow Years solo is great.

Petrucci has some kick ass solos and the Hollow Years live solo is incredible, but he also has some unnecessary w**k too. That last minute of This Dying Soul they could have left out, totally unnecessary w**kage. Some of the solos off the last album and SC were pretty meh too. Petrucci wrote his best solo in the 90s IMO.

IM does have a great deal less instrumental w**kery, that is true. They are great players, without needing to show it off.
DT I think do write excellent songs (many people here say they can't write good songs), but they could do with some editing, I think. Check out Misunderstood or Home, for example. Awesome songs, IMO, but the last minute or so of them is unnecessary. And indeed, so is the last minute of This Dying Soul.

Not much of a fan of either but forced to choose I will go with the much better musicians that are Dream Theater.

Iron Maiden. One of the greatest bands, all time, all categories. Dream Theater...one or two good albums, one great.
So it isn't much of a competition in my case.

My first ever concert was Maiden back in 1987 when I was only 13 years old. And I'm still fond of 'em so there's my answer.

My vote goes to the 'Theater.
I think Iron Maiden became a characature of themselves over the years. One might argue that Dream Theater is starting to do the same, however. I just never saw how Maiden was special one way or another. A pretty good metal band, in my opinion, but not good enough to take down the best progressive metal band.

I'm going to a show where DT is opening for IM later this year, and some of you may hate me for this but I'm probably going to leave before Iron Maiden; sorry, I'm not a big fan of their music...

Let's see... one that somehow luckily managed to make an album in the 80s (bless 'em for making at least one during that magical decade) or the band that defined metal in the 80s... hmmm

Iron Maiden has more raw energy and emotion...they get the vote in my book

Point 1. Although both are excellent vocalists, I found Dickinson less emotional than La Brie. But on Live performances Bruce really Kick-Asses, While La Brie has the tendency to I'll Give a tie here. Point 2. While Steve Harris has created a school, and has one of the best Right Hand in the business, John Myung has developed an incredible skill level on his instrument. Point Myung. Point 3. Jhon Petrucci has kinda lost his mojo, since SFAM, Where is the emotion? Despite what I said, his soloing is superb (listen Under A Glass Moon). On the other hand the CHEMISTRY between Maiden's axemen is Awesome. Point Maiden Point 4. IMHO Despite being a superb drummer Portnoy has the tendency to overplay in the song, while I always enjoy the finesse that Mc Brain brought to Maiden. Point Nicko Point 5. Totally Agree, classic Maiden are THE COVER ARTS.
