Although I'm not all that wild about their first three albums, they were easily amongst the best from 1976-82, possibly THE best considering how so many prog bands had either split or gone AOR around then whilst Rush were peaking and creating some of the best albums of the genre, imo. However, whilst they don't do bad albums, their later work (bar select songs) does less for me personally. It's obviously a personal thing as there's no obvious drop in quality in their later work a la much of late period Genesis and many of Yes' post GFTO albums.
I'd put them in the 'super prog' category myself- if not in the higher echelons but certainly around the middle.

Hail to the UK collaborators Tony R and Chessman, it seems that they have sublimated their frustrations about the England team on the World Championship football in Germany this year to an extremely high level, especially Tony R has delivered a superb both sarcastic as constructive contribution I am really jealous at , your holiday does well to you Tony R !
Anyway, it seems that our beloved and often praised Rush is on the brink of entering the super prog category .. !

I can remember going into record stores in the late 70s early 80s and seeing Rush in the Heavy Metal section. Personally I don't really care how anyone else classifies them, big 5, big 6 whatever, to me they belong in the BIG 1. I would point out that after the death of prog (76-77) they were about the only band carrying the prog torch until the neo-prog hit in 83.

Why the likes of BF get involved in a discussion about Rush is beyond me.We have all accepted that Gong are the only important band in Progressive Rock, despite the fact that Gong are neither progressive nor do they rock.
Whilst Gong were happily ensuring through their winning formula of combining a throwaway joke with soporific musicianship that prog would be confined to the margins,Rush with their lack of imagination, terribly unappealing vocalist and ill-educated unintelligent drummer were struggling to have an impact in the US charts with their #3 albums Permanent Waves,Moving Pictures and Signals. This at a time when Punk and New Wave had ensured the extinction of the dinosaurs.Heck even their Live album ESL got to #6 in the American chart and all the subsequent 80s output went top 10. In the Uk more affected by the Punk explosion Rush managed a string of Top 5 albums and a Top 20 single-this from a Canadian Band! Rush have been a band since 1969 BTW and released their first album in 1974.
Ok so popularity is not a sign of quality, but Rush have never been a commercial band nor have they ever had the weight of the media behind them to help them along. They have always done things their way and are easily the most professional Prog band around.
Rush are far more influential to todays Rock,Prog and Metal bands than any of the 70s so-called Supergroups. Read any drum magazine and you will see Peart feted as a god by hundreds of top drummers and the band in general gets namechecked more than all the so-called Prog Supergroups put together. I am not making this up.
But for Rush, none of us would probably be here......

Yes, that tripod logo sure looks nice, Erik.
If the popularity of the albums in the Archives hot 100 or 500 matters,
then ELP should be left out of the superprog category. Not that I would
mind. I'm no fan of either Rush or ELP, but the latter made their
most important albums when prog was new, fresh and developing its
sound.
And just as eh... Marillion, Rush are not among progs big pioneering bands. Like all the other serious contenders are.

I just replaced the 'tripod logo's, irritating!
In my opinion Marillion was a great band but way from Rush if you look at the pioneering ideas (just read Tony R his post about that ).

You don't seem to have read many of my posts, else you wouild know I
raise my voice for a lot more bands than Gong. Not for Rush though, who
are very mediocre in my opinion. It is not their ability on the
instruments I doubt, they all definitely know how to play; but they
simply lack musical ideas that fascinate me. Maybe I would feel
different about them had I grown up with them, but I haven't.
As for your opinion about Gong: Nuts, they definitely do rock (it seems
you never heard tracks like "Master Builder") and are definitely
progressive too. I myself would not doubt the progressiveness of Rush, by the way.
And finally: It is more the Rush fans that have blind spots for other
bands. There are more posts hyperbolizing Rush than of any other band.

Mongo, don't forget about (shortlived) UK, they were my biggest progrock hope in the late Seventies and early Eighties because Yes, ELP and Genesis made progressive pop, King Crimson was disbanded by 'jerk' Fripp (see that thread about him) and Pink Floyd suffered from the inner troubles between Waters and the rest of the band.

oh dear god yeah... Dream Theater takes that in a runaway.
Friede.. I feel much the same way about Rush in general though there
are certain songs and one particular album that still remain fresh to
this day. They are fantastic musicians.. but not particularly
interesting in my eyes. Besides everything pre-75 and post 82 in for
die hard fans only. That's a relatively small window in the
course of such a long career. Much mediocrity do I see hahah. But
that's just me of course...
