It's actually very Proggish, some Prog Metal bands are basically Prog Rock bands that play a bit heavier.
|
..I think we all know that already....The thing you have to realize, I think, is that it is NOT enough to have progressive elements in your music to acctually become prog. That is the hole point. I know that you think that DT is prog playing hard, but I see it the other way around. DT is metal with prog elements, and like I said, it isn't enough!

Who cares if Dream Theater can discourage people from "Prog ROCK". They can also get some people into it (like me). At the end of the day, it's only music and it's hear for us to enjoy. Would you rather everyone be into prog? Or would you rather stand out and be one in a handful?

Yeah prog seems to be a religion to you... at least you're acting like
a religious fanatic: "They're not prog, I know what's prog, the music I
like is prog, the music I don't like is not prog.."
Dude, get a life, you're pathetic.

Dream Teatre don't suck.... they're just pointless. A pointless band , playing pointless stuff, calling it progressive just because it sounds different from the pop music killed by MTV. Progressive rock, a term which I don't usually use (don't like the fact of sticking all those different groups just under one name) , should be a bridge from pop music to jazz and even classical music, expecially for young listeners. It's very educative in a sense.
So, it's got to have at least some elements coming from those 2 ambiences. But I don't mean that "neoclassical" (whatever....) 80s sh*t: The composers have to undertand and actually LISTEN to different genres. Petrucci for exemple is technically perfect.... but it's just a pointless exercise for finger articulation: it doesn't say anything more than a Malmsteen to me....it doesn't explore REALLY other genres, it just refers to them in a kitschy way........
big special effects of all sorts to catch teens attention, and make them believe to be different from the rest....... poor dudes....

1-
Well, you would be AMAZED by the quantity of music Mike Portnoy (one of
the composers) hears. He's into so much various, different stuff, you
can't imagine. So this argument is nonsense.
2-
ahhh....Prog geeks say : DT isn't prog !!!
Metal geeks say : DT isn't metal !!!
Well, maybe DT is the perfect mix, and therefore you can't really say
what it is, OR it's just that music classifications are DUMB and DULL
!!!!
"Talking about music is like dancing about architecture", the Great Frank Zappa once said....
3-
"it's just a pointless exercise to finger articulation" : well, so
you're also saying that most of the baroque and classical music (who's
a lot of w**king, let's admit it) is also only a simple
exercise...oooook......
It's funny all your arguments are pointless, nonsense, useless, leading nowhere....
4-
I'm becoming tired of weekly "why does people hate DT" threads over
here. Looks like it's a f**kING trend to dtupidly and pointlessly bash,
diss, and blame DT for people misunderstanding the whole "prog" thing.
Finally, NO I'm not a DT-only teen...I listen to many more things, from
classic prog to heavy metal to space rock....So you can't say that i'm
those kind of "ignorant young so-called progheads"....

The sad thing is, some people feel like they HAVE to bash other bands,
like if they were sooo enjoying it. To the DT (and others related)
bashers : Just listen to the DAMN music you like !!! If you dont like,
dont listen !!! it's as simple.
And it's a lot more sad than many of these people pretend themselves "open-minded and wise prog fans"....

Henri_Ds, you and I have something in common there then. Because that is my overall attitude. I am open-minded to everything. But if there is a certain band I don't like. I don't listen to it. Simple as that. I don't bitch and whine about how famous they are and I don't tell their fans that the band is sh*t or anything. I just accept that I don't like this band, and leave it at that.

That right there is one of the most common and ignorant things someone could say.
Besides, your comments have pretty much no value to me, as your only way of arguing a point is swearing and being being abusive towards people.

That's very true (and for Petrucci and I think at least one of the keyboard players, I don't know about the others). All of them do listen to a lot of different music, and I'm pretty sure they understand it - Petrucci definitely knows what he's doing. Whether or not that comes through on DT (or anyone else)'s records I can't say - if I'm in a good mood it does, if I'm not it doesn't... but to say they don't understand other forms of music just doesn't ring true.

Surely if they were the perfect mix prog geeks would say they were prog and metal geeks would say they were metal?
I love sitting on the fence, it means I can snipe at both sides of the argument
