I'm happy that Magma got number 1, yeah, but I wouldn't care too much if DT or PT got it either.  It's all a matter of opinion.  Just because I don't rate those bands as highly as I do Magma doesn't mean that I have it out for them, just like I'm sure you don't particularly have it out for Magma.

Except for Jon and me, I haven't noticed any expression of excitement over Magma's success in the Shred or elsewhere. I'm sure Greg is secretly happy, but he's way too diplomatic for us to squeeze anything else than a overly argumented neutral opinion out of him LOL

A fantastic list, and I'm thrilled to see that maudlin of the Well have got second place, and just as happy to see my review quoted for it.Tongue

I think its the best looking list that we've seen since the voting started in 05, its quite diverse which is a surprise as its a collective vote from nearly 90 people. I was surprised to see a few pages backtalk about metal domination in the list, I counted a grand total of 7 metal albums in the top 50, showing that there might be more prog metal released than any other genre, but the high quality remains with a small number.

Oh, and rushfan, as far as I know E-Re is music thats been developed over nearly 40 years, but only recently has it been completed and commited to disc, so its definitely new music.

And lastly a big thank you to Rico for doing such a great job with the poll, especially with getting the results out only 1 day after the vote closed.Clap

I can live with that.  As I said it was my understanding that they had released a live version in the 70's and just got around to releasing a studio album now.  If it truly is new music, then I can live with that.

And I second the big thank you to Rico.

Magma hamtai. As to the others, let there be glao.  Kobaian is the language of the dun, erm, heart.
Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

It's old and new music in a new package one might say.  And ditto on the excellent job, Vic!  Magma has excellent new music that I expected to find on this CD (maybe on the next one).

Thanks again to Vic for the great jobClap! It would be nice, however, if someone commented on the other albums featured on the list, instead of concentrating on Magma, DT and PT. Don't you agree?

Yeah, I'm hoping we get at least two more albums out of them; one of new material as you mentioned, and the other maybe finally a studio rendition of Theusz Hamtaahk.

I have to say I am surprised by the absence of one of my favourite albums of 2009 (though it didn't make my Top 5) - Forgas Band Phenomena's L'Axe du Fou. Perhaps not many people have heard it, which is a pity.

Delirium - Il Nome Del Vento
18. Nemo - Barbares
20. Cheer-Accident - Fear Draws Misfortune
23. Present - Barbaro (Ma Non Troppo)
27. Gong - 2032
42. Beardfish - Destined Solitaire
    Aranis - Songs From Mirage
44. Alamaailman Vasarat - Huuro Kolkko
Il Castello Di Atlante - Capitolo 7: Tra Le Antiche Mura

Those are the albums I either (in bold) own and really enjoy, (italicized) own and like or (underlined) don't own yet and know for sure I want to get.  The rest of the albums, I don't own and I either know I don't want them or I've not heard enough of them to make up my mind.

I was a bit upset about the low placement of Alamaailman Vasarat and Gong, but I feel as if not too many people probably had the first and the Gong seems a bit below their earlier output IMO so I'm not too surprised.

I was also a bit sad to not see miRthkon's Vehicle on the list, but it's probably another case of not enough people knowing about it.

How's that Raff? Tongue

That would be fantastic.  Re Raff's comment: I go where the discussion takes me.  I'd be happy to discuss Miriodor's Avanti (great album), Led Bib's Sensible Shoes (another excellent album), Cheer-Accident's Fear Draws Misfortune (didn't wow me as it did others -- bit of a disappointment but I still like it) Present's Barbaro (I prefer Present's recent live material than the studio album and prefer UZ's latest), Aranis' Songs from Mirage (my least favourite Aranis, but still good), and Gong's latest (not really a fan of this album to be honest).

I have a question, what do people think the best album from JRF this year?

I haven't heard much JR/F output from this year.  In fact, I think the only release I have is the live Return to Forever.  I've had it for a while, but I don't think I've managed to listen the whole way through.  What are some of your favorites?

The problem with Gong might also be
- the modern sound, somewhat cold and electric
- too much music and too little wackiness LOL
- a bit of uniformity and lack of variation.

So I can accept non-fans not liking it very much. Still it's a top-10 album of 2009 for me.

My problem with it was mainly in Gilli's pieces.  They really didn't do very much for me, and overall the album felt too long.  The album did have some great pieces on it too, though, like Escape Control Delete, for example.

What, wasnt me talking about maudlin of the Well enough?Wink

OK, glad to see Indukti in the top half of the list as well, a fantastic album but one I know that is a bit polarizing (as my thread on the album earlier in the year demonstrated).

I've just realised that 4 of my votes made the top 10 (Indukti being the other). I think thast the first time I've gone entirely for popular albums.LOL

I have listened to around 80 albums from 2009 (I didn't count how many of them were prog), but I don't remember listening to any fusion album! Not quite a good year, eh? Shocked

@ Greg: Forgas Band Phenomena is classified as JR/F here, so here's your answer (see my above post).

@Jon: surprised about MiRthkon too. I reviewed Vehicle for the other site, and gave it the top rating at my disposal. I'd say it's better than Cheer-Accident, or even Miriodor.

Exactly! One of my top three prog tracks from 2009. Very agreed on "too long", also. But I like Gilli's parts (always have; do you know her 70s solo album?)
