1956

Elvis Presley's eponymous debut album, and another album "Elvis"
Three Ragas - Ravi Shankar
This is Sinatra! - Frank Sinatra
Two For Tonight - Bing Crosby
Bing Sings Whilst Bregman Swings – Bing Crosby
The Unique Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Monk
Ellington at Newport - Duke Ellington

Need more be said?

Also for a few hit singles:

"Roll Over Beethoven" - Chuck Berry
"Hound Dog", "Heartbreak Hotel", "Don't be Cruel" - Elvis Presley
"I Walk the Line" - Johnny Cash

I will say, I had the pleasure of seeing Elvis, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and more all play live during these times, while I was a young kid (even got to shake John Lennon's hand).

Just gotta be an old fart and brag lol.

I'm old enough that my birth year predates prog.  But that was still the golden age of jazz, especially hard bop.  But post bop was starting to emerge, and in a way, post bop is to Jazz what prog is to rock, so there is a bit of a proggy connection in some of my selections.  My top 10 from 1964:

1. Lee Morgan: The Sidewinder
2. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers: Free For All
3. Grant Green: The Matador
4. Blue Mitchell: The Thing to Do
5. Lee Morgan: Tom Cat
6. Kenny Burrell: Soul Call
7. Freddie Hubbard: Breaking Point
8. Joe Henderson: In n' Out
9. Herbie Hancock: Empyrean Isles
10. Andrew Hill: Point of Departure

Nothing too great in that year:
Leonard Cohen: Ten New Songs
Radiohead: Amnesiac
Talk Talk: Missing Pieces
Tool: Lateralus (haven't heard it, but it's famous)

100% Blue Note! Nice list, though mine for 1964 BNs would include Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch, Sam Rivers’ Fuchsia Swing Song, Grachan Moncur's Some Other Stuff and Jackie McLean's Action Action Action.

Possibly the label's greatest year?

EDIT: My mistake, the Burrell was on Prestige, wasn't it?

2005 was a great year for music, and my favorite album from that year (which is when I was born) would have to be Aerial by Kate Bush, followed very closely by The End Is Beautiful by Echolyn.

Kraftwerk - Die Mensch-Maschine
Bruford - Feels Good to Me
Magma - Attahk
Queen - Jazz
Jean-Michel Jarre - Equinoxe
Dire Straits - s/t
Patti Smith - Easter

So many of PA's top albums from 2001 are prog metal I haven't listened to. There's Yes' Magnification, which I think is fine, but the album I like most from that year is Estradasphere's Buck Fever.

1986

A quick look on PA and RYM prog lists, I couldn’t find a single album I’ve even heard.

I requested help by Google and found a couple that I’ve actually listened to and enjoyed:

Metallica - Masters of Puppets
Europe - The Final Countdown

Metallica came in my teens, but Europe I listened to as a kid. We had that album on cassette tape. There surely has to be more good music made this year, so maybe I should explore a bit.

I'm a fossil, born in 1955.  I pick Miles Davis "Blue Moods."

Lots of good classic jazz to pick from!

^ I was too young to remember any album that came out the year I was born, but I guess this poll is not about what you remember or not. You must have a list for reference, Paul...?

Mine would be:

I have a long list of albums in front of me from 1959 - the year I was born, but there's nothing that really stands out for me, simply because they're all a bit before my time, in just the same way as I never watch movies made before 1959.  I guess I would choose a 1959 album by Les Baxter & His Orchestra though, seeing as I have 32 of his albums on CD. I'm much more in tune with the music of the sixties, especially the Summer of Love year of 1967. Smile

1961 was a pretty good year for my favorite jazz solo artist. Here is my Top 5 of that year:
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
John Coltrane - Ole Coltrane
Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane – s/t
Miles Davis - Someday My Prince Will Come
Oliver Nelson - The Blues and the Abstract Truth

2) Pink Floyd: ASFOS
3) Jethro Tull: This Was
4) Caravan: Caravan

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson
