Unless you listen to Emo, Powerpop, or Nu Metal.

to conclude, let's say maidenrules RULES, except for putting gentle giant in the package of musical horrors!
I believe music is OBJECTIVE. I believe in an ultimate committee who can decide for us what is good and bad! some of you need help, because you are at the point you cannot distinguish the good from the bad! you are lost, but you don't ask help to find your way!
music is not a right; it is a responsability you have to filter what is crappy; music is a way to get a reliable taste! music is light, love, passion, peace, positiveness, order, not the opposite!
if you cannot select what is REALLY good, then ask some help! ask how people do when it is time to have refined taste. this thread is EXTREMELY important since it warns you about the danger of liking recent bands who produce 1-star albums!
music is like books: the classical ones are the best ones, being sure values! do not imitate other people! have a different taste! you have to be reliable! be reliable, not marginal!
I can help you to improve your musical taste, avoiding people to not take you seriously.
you are fed with MacDonalds and you feel great! you do not want to change it because you are not old enough to begin suffer from the bad nutrition: you learn by experience, not prevention. you do not want to find what is really good because you like unconsciously the mainstream of prog! you need Hendrix-Emerson-Lake & Palmer!
We can hear your crying for HELP: for you, it is totally silent; for us, it is a roaring silence!
|
I have been thinking for a long time that you shouldn't be allowed to be a collaborator. How much I respect most of your contributions, your extreme view on music (and the reviews you write because of this, especially of Trout Mask Replica and THRAK) is not professional and very annoying for people who DO like (almost) all forms of experimental music (and there are a lot of people like that here).

Well, for starters, you wrote in your initial post "And although it might be original it is not melodic and that kind of misses the point then when the purpose of composing music is just to make it as strange and ugly as possible. Now there are several prog bands that do this, and too name a few Van der graaf generator, the residents, magma, gentle giant, the mars volta and so on. " And since I like EVERYTHING VDGG did, and EVERYTHING I heard from Magma and GG as well, that includes those passages you mention as well. On top of that I have DON'T DISLIKE ANYTHING BECAUSE IT IS TOO WEIRD. If something is very weird, I like it, or I dislike it because I "don't get it yet", then I try to "get it" by playing it more often. You see?

I LOOOOVE van der graaf generator, gentel giant and magma and mars volt and the residents as i got most of their albums on vinyl. 90% of the time the residents composes melodic music i just dont get the 10% of the time when they are not meldic. I mean the residents got SOME very good pieces of music like vileness fats or the swinging larvae BUT they also got something wich to me is more like a parody of great music... And thats what i dislike...ANYWAYS the residents is a pretty melodic band and so are all the other ones NOW as i said i will post some mp3 soon to give you a idea of what true STRANGE music is like, and if you hounetly ENJOY that music i will give up the argument

Maidenrulez:
Actually I agree with you that some avant-garde stuff sounds extremely forced and lifeless to me. But who knows, maybe it's actually good and I simply don't get it. I'm not going to point fingers (yet). I always try to give an artist the benefit of the doubt and trust him/her that there is a good reason behind his/her work. Sometimes it takes some time, but I've found that this approach usually pays off in the end .
Re Hendrix - (I hope someone more knowledgeable can correct me here, if I'm wrong) even jazz guitarists admit to have been blown away by his playing at the time. And jazz cats were light years ahead of rock guitarists in terms of creativity and technique then. So there you go - there seems to be much more to J.H.'s strange noises.
Greenback:
I'm very sorry to say this, but you'd be likely to make it big in the Third Reich Ministry of Culture. Same attitude; understandable in a way, but ultimately EXTREMELY harmful.

Is there a secret competiton here in listening to the most strange music on this forum
Now there are atleast one prog artist that took this strangeness to
far and then lost the point...there seems to be alot of artists that a

You seem to have a very limiting view of music. Perhaps when you
have heard a million bands that all begin to sound interchangeable, you
too will yearn to hear music that challenges convention and stimulates
the human spirit of the unknown...
|
Now now have you ever heard the residents? Alot of their music is
great however some of their tracks seems have only been constructed in
the purpose in making the strangest and least melodic musis ever made. |
Dutch band named KIEM with Huub Kentie had played very "strange " kind
of music full of joy and music jokes, with furious sax, but there were
many melodies between noise.
Words about KIEM - it has jazz origin but I think they were bored with it and made some funny but real music

Something less melodic than that? Bearing in mind apart from I think two albums he's done with beats on, that's his most accessible.
