Thats my favorite Gentle Giant, Egg and Van der Graaf Generator albums. Your dissapointment no. 1 and 5 are both in my alltime top ten.

My disappointing five:
Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans Genesis - And Then There were Three Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste Premiata Forneria Marconi - Chocolate Kings Teru's Symphonia - Fable of the Seven Pillows
Honorable mention:
Magma - Attahk
But ya know, thinking about it I realize that I have been disappointed as much as pleasently surprised.
So it goes........

he's "rapped" on every PoS release to date I believe but yeah so far that one constitutes my list Tales wasn't exactly a letdown as I went in expecting it to be bad and it turned out to be okay

Here's a list for the 5 most dissapointing prog albums I ever bought
1. David Gilmour- On An Island 2. Yes- Close To The Edge 3. Billy Cobham- Magic 4. Frank Zappa- Jazz From Hell 5. Jethro Tull- Thick As A Brick
Anyone else? |
you must be a newbie in the prog world. because 2 of the greatest records in the prog world are JT "thick and YEs " Close the Edge".
Yes Close doenst have a weak moment as Thick either. Bll, Chris, Jon and Steve at the peak of their carrier. it is extremely hard to be called a prog fan and not like these 2 albums. Zappa and Billy aren't really prog but Fusion specially Billy. David's new album is really good what do you expect the man is getting old and tire. He isn't in his 20's anymore so give him credits for his age and for the time we are living. the man is a legend.

Okay, just to be nice, and in a spirit of communal compromise, I'll join in the fun.
I won't blame these purchases on reviews read here though (there's PLENTY of opportunity to legally sample the bigger bands and key albums listed here via the streaming audio feeds ), as these were all bought long before the Internet, and simply because I was already a big fan of each band.
Re my reasons for not liking them, I have already reviewed the first three, commented on the fourth in a recent thread, and simply found the fifth to a be a woefully uninspired, insipid sellout:
Jethro Tull - Under Wraps (Utter Crap)
Genesis - Duke (Puke)
Renaissance - Camera Camera (Chlamydia Chlamydia?)
Yes - Tormato (Bore-mato)
Triumvirat - A La Carte (A La Farte)
All late 70s - 80s efforts -- troubled, lost years for prog in general. |
but Hey Duke isn't that Bad!! it has a few and Tomato has onward. the only and best tune of the whole album

OK. maybe I should start typing on the thread giving an advice e to the new kids in the Block that just recently discover prog fews years ago.
Don't' hesitate and don't get disappointed with the albums that we "OLD" timers prog fans( 23 years as prog fans) rags bragging about all the time specially those album and bands from the glory days of prog.(1968-80)
Maybe I am wrong but I Could be right coming from my own experiences.
sometimes those disappointed albums and band s might become your favorite years later. I remember when I couldn't get into King Crimson and early Pink Floyd .I found them too damn weird. also VdGG and Gentle Giants .
Peter voice was so damn annoying anf Gente Giants was one the hardest bands to get into their music change the tempo and mood too often, but now I those 4 bands are my top favorite. So don't worry. TIme will tell.
Now for the past 3 years I have been getting into RIo/Avant Garde prog oh Boy!!!
bands like:
Magma
Universe Zero ( I only have 1313 and Heresie the craziest and weirdest stuff I ever heard)
Henry Cow
Thnking Plague
Gaupo
Ahvak( they only have one album excellent avant gard prog)
Nebelnest ( this band is pretty much influenced by King Crimson all the way so it was too hard)
Well i said before with the other bands I am having a hard time with Magma and Univers at first but they are growing on me little by little.... Ha!!! who know what the futute might bring.

CLOSE TO THE EDGE!!!!!!!!!! MOST OVERRATED ALBUM IN THE HISTORY OF PROG!
2. The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath is an absolute mess
3. Flower Tavellin' Band - Satori is just pointless jamming
4. Pink Floyd Momentary Lapse of Reason
5. Dream Theater Systematic Chaos. Honestyl, Prog Metal has become a mockery of itself in recent years so much so that even one of the founding bands of the genre can't focus on what is actually important about the musicv anymore.

The best thing about prog music is that it's totally subjective. I agree with Nursery Cryme, I had to give it away, it was taking up too much space in my cupboard. Elegant Gypsy - no way - absolute classic. Mediterranean Sundance absolutely brilliant, but I wouldn't classify it as prog.
Crimson87 has included one of my favorite and one of my worst. All totally subjective. There is no rhyme or reason why we like or dislike anything.

By "hype" do you mean genuine praise and favourable reviews, and by "the archives" do you mean many different, independent-minded prog fans?
Because, you know, this is a website for ordinary prog fans -- not financially-motivated music industry advertisers. Praising prog albums we actually like is one of the main things we do here. We do it for free -- out of a spirit of joy, and a simple desire to share that joy.
I resent your condescending use of "hype." By extension, my own five-star review of CTTE is lumped in under your dismissive, insulting "hype" -- as will be the carefully-expressed, sincere reviews and posts of many others.
As I suggested earlier in this thread, I would strongly advise restraint with this word. See its definitions, below:
- Excessive publicity and the ensuing commotion: the hype surrounding the murder trial.
- Exaggerated or extravagant claims made especially in advertising or promotional material: “It is pure hype, a gigantic PR job” (Saturday Review).
- An advertising or promotional ploy: “Some restaurant owners in town are cooking up a $75,000 hype to promote New York as ‘Restaurant City, U.S.A.’” (New York).
- Something deliberately misleading; a deception: “[He] says that there isn't any energy crisis at all, that it's all a hype, to maintain outrageous profits for the oil companies” (Joel Oppenheimer).
********************************************************************************************
PS: Re the Gentle Giant, why didn't you "actually" listen to some, before buying an album? (We have sample tracks freely available here.)
Again, I have to question the maturity and wisdom of this thread topic, along with the cavalier sentiments of some of the respondents! |
Jesus Peter- (sorry for the late reply by the way) I didn't know that my posts were analyzed to such degree. It must make you feel quite proud to point out the mistakes on a post that took me 2 minutes to write.

I'm starting to feel the same way. I actually was listening to the album today, and I got bored with it halfway through.

Who says anything about throwing away or these albums being horrible??? (Well, some have said that the albums were trash to some extent) I believe that many here on PA will see a lot of positive talk, read great review after great review and just get swept up into an album, holding VERY high expectations before even hearing it. (Yes, I am guilty as well) Saying an album is disappointing doesn't take away any 'genius' of an album at all. Some albums that start disappointing may turn out to be a very well liked album.
