You get me wrong; I am not saying he is not a good drummer. All I am saying is that it is not "Peart", then nothing for a mile and then others. That is simply not true. Others are just as good as he. And that's a fact.,

Carl Palmer is definitely my favourite and i would say he is the greatest.

But i would be wrong none of the drummers on the list would be a 3rd as good as they are without the great Buddy Rich (8 votes??????)

Agreed.  Many others do approach his talent.

I know you are a fan Pierre Moerlen - there is another one who should be considered one of the best.

as a drummer myself i believe that the bands that they have played count a lot, many have listed very good drummers but that have never been in a Master Band (you know which) i mean you cant say Colaiuta is the best because he hasn't played in anything major (zappa albums only).... well that's how i look at it and besides why God Palmer is way way back in votes c'mon TANK anyone...

Has Pier L. Calderoni been mentioned yet? If not, well now he has. Pure genius and yet subtle.

Tie between these three for me. Portnoy is also awesome but loses by a hair...

What i am a fan of is not important at all, and I certainly would not call Moerlen "the best", for reasons already given. There are dozens of excellent drummers. calling someone "the best" is a mixture of fanboyism and ignorance.

Actually, Colaiuta has played with a LOT of other artists, all over the place!  But one of the best performances I've seen of Vinnie's has to be with Jeff Beck, Live at Ronnie Scotts.  Check out that DVD;  if you're a Jeff Beck fan, you'll love it, if you're a Vinnie Colaiuta fan, you'll love him even more, and if you're a heterosexual, red-blooded American (or even if your NOT American!) male, you'll LOVE to watch Tal Wilkenfeld on bass -- she's REALLY GOOD, and she's real cute, too!

Peace!

I think that statment basically sums up my attitude about this whole topic, too.

This, of course, applies to any instrument.

I heard a great drummer once, went by the code name "Twostikks"

"fanboyism and ignorance"  seems a little harsh on people just musing about who they think is the best drummer.  Oh, BaldFriede wrote that, never mind.

There is a difference between "best" and "favourite". If someone mistakes the latter for the first, how shall I call it? How do you measure "best"? Speed, complexity, power, variety? To quote organ player Barbara Dennerlein: "Music is a communication, not a competition".

So musing on, for example, the greatest (ie "the best") composer, scientist, painter (artist) or architect of all times is an immature practice?

Odd that. I imagine that wherever people have got together for intelligent discussion, ever since we have been able to communicate intelligently presumably, debating who is the "best" has been pretty high on the topic list; best farmer, brewer, weaver, etc etc. In fact this "immature" practice has probably driven excellence since time immemorial.

How do you measure "best" when it comes to arts? By "arts" I mean everything that includes - painting, sculpting, playing music, composing music, acting, writing and so on? It all comes down to personal tastes, nothing more.

^ There is technique of course and skill levels that can be measured.  There is also certain level of experience that can be measured as well.  I am not sure you can measure one guy as THE best but you can certainly separate the men from the boys so to speak.

In my opinion there are two guys who certainly are responsible for most of the guys we are speaking about in this thread.  The prototype of the modern drummer at which we all gape at in awe.  That would be Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson.
