I can't personally think of any progressive rock musicians whom this term as defined in this manner would apply to.  I'm sure there are some, but I can't think of any.  Prog can be pompous, bombastic, and showy, but pretentious much less often, in my opinion.

I agree. And yet I hear people say they are proud that prog is pretentious and that they listen to pretentious music.  Either I've got the meaning of pretentious all wrong or it's a much abused word.   I do find classical-crossover kind of stuff pretentious but I would concede even there that it could be argued to be a matter of preference.  If somebody wants to listen to pop-ified versions of classical songs and if the artists in question market it as 'classical' or 'sophisticated', let them.  It doesn't really matter...at least, not anymore.

I don't see anything pretentious in most prog music. As others have pointed, some individuals may be pretentious but the art they make is seldom pretentious.
There may be some examples of prog musicians who made rather bad music and behaved as if they were making great music, I can't think of any right now on the spot but there may be a few, and that could be called pretentious, but I can surely think of many more of this kind outside of the prog realm. Prog is surely less pretentious than most mainstream music.
