Topic: 1975 or 1976? Posted: September 24 2015 at 16:53 |
Both great years for prog music, it's quite difficult to pick which is better. I was originally planning on doing 1976 and 1977, but I felt overall 1975 put up a fairer fight. Here's some highlights
1975 http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=&salbumtypes=1&syears=1975&scountries=&sminratings=0&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=100&x=78&y=15#list 1976 http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=&salbumtypes=1&syears=1976&scountries=&sminratings=0&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=100&x=30&y=9#list
Gonna go with 1976 I think. I love the two Genesis albums in addition to Tangerine Dream's Stratosfear, Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene and The Enid's In The Region of The Summer Stars quite a lot plus more. With that said, 1975 has so many good records too. Klaus Schulze's Timewind, Jethro Tull's Minstrel In The Gallery, Camel's The Snow Goose, Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte, and Pavlov's Dog Pampered Menial and Renaissance Scheherazade and Other Stories re some of my favorite records of all time.

I fondly recall that 1975 was a great year for rock music all the way around: Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti, Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery, Floyd's Wish You Were Here, Roxy Music's Siren, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Beck's Blow by Blow, Neil Young's Tonight's the Night, Zappa's One Size Fits All, Sabbath's Sabotage and Dylan's Blood on the Tracks.

This is tough. I want to vote for '76 because it has Stratosfear, Roller, Strange New Flesh, Unorthodox Behaviour, 2112, Leftoverture, the self-titled Alas and two of my favorite Genesis albums. '75 doesn't outdo '76 in sheer quality, it simply has more killer albums that were released that year. I'll have to think about this.

1975 has Harmonium's Five Seasons album, Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn, Pink Floyd's Wish you were Here, Rick Wakeman's King Arthur album, Reniassance's "Scheherazade" album, and Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte. So it's easy 75 for me.

Oh easy for me. 76 only had Rush, The Residents, Steely Dan and Birth Control for me. 75 has Floyd, VdGG, Harmonium, GG, Zappa, Quiet Sun, Hatfield, Yezda, Squire, Cow, Birth Control, Steely Dan, Rush, Pavlov's Dog... I can go on and on.

1975 has the two great French Canadian albums, Les Porches and Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme Saison. I could almost go for it just based on those. I think 76 has the better VDGG album but that's about it. And Stratosfear might be my favourite Tangerine Dream.

Though 1976 was a good year, this is a no-brainer: 1975 is the best prog year ever in my book. If I limit my view to the albums which I would give a 5-star rating, there are nine in '75 against three in '76 in these lists. And if I look further on the list, the situation will not be different.
Edit: Ricochet is a live album which belongs also to the 1975 vintage and does not have any tracks appearing on any studio album. Another one to take into account.

The Portuguese revolution was in 74 but the Spanish was in 75.
Voted for 1975, Quarteto 1111's last album was also released that year
