there are many things you could accuse Gabriel of, but that is most certainly not one of them!

He does a great quiet/loud dynamic and sings with more feeling than a lot of other bands.
But... Sorry Peter, he's not Freddie Mercury.

I like him, but no, he's not my favourite.
My fave singer, the late Helmut Koellen of Triumvirat, does sound similar, though.

I think to say the best is really difficult, Peter Gabriel is great, but not my favorite... or better is   one among several.  For example : Jon Anderson, Greg Lake, Geedy Lee, David Byron, Annie Hasslan, Sonja Kristina , Brett Khull and Ray Wiston (Echolyn), Margriet Boomsma (Flamborough Head) etc, etc, etc.....

PG is definitely the best there is. Other favourites are probably Geddy Lee, Jon Anderson, and Steve Wilson.

Absolutley not. He's actually among my least favourite singers. He was the most difficult aspect of getting to like Genesis for me... and even now I would say I like the band despite his singing.

Genesis are my favourite band, but PG is not my favourite singer. He's pretty good at what he does, and the voice works with the music, but he's far from a brilliant vocalist IMO..
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I recall an interview with an audio engineer about how certain records from the past would be done in the recording climate of today. He thought PG was pretty good (the subject was Sledge hammer) but now he's have Gabriel with some auto tune.

No, he's not my favourite singer, not even my favourite Genesis singer. Nor my favourite Genesis lyricist though to be fair I don't a have favourite there either...

And try as I might I could not connect much with his post Genesis career though I do try still. Sort of more respected than truly liked. I think he belongs best inside that song writing team environment - results wise. But he may like being his own man and heaven knows he's got a big career.

One of my favourite CHARACTERS in prog but not a favourite SINGER.  I think he was able to compensate for what his voice per se lacked with his dramatization but as uduwudu put it, without a whole ensemble to support such an approach, it wouldn't work. Thom Yorke sounds way more powerful than Gabriel on his cover of Street Spirit and that just about says it all.
