Nemrud was established in the second half of 2008 in Istanbul by Mert Göçay, Harun Sönmez and Aycan Sarı. By the time the band had its current formation, there had been several changes in the composition of band members. In mid 2010, Nemrud released their first conceptual Progressive Rock album “Journey of the Shaman” by Musea Records from France. Before becoming the permanent member of the Nemrud, Mert Topel was one of the guest musicians of the successful debut. The current line-up was formed with the participations of Mert Alkaya in 2010 and Levent Candaş in 2015 as band members.Nemrud has been released Journey of the Shaman, extended version of Ritual and in May 2016 latest conceptual S/T album by Rainbow 45 Records in Vinyl LP (180gr. Black Heavy Vinyl in Gatefold Sleeve). All of the albums are available in many record stores in Europe and USA.  

The group is named after the Mount Nemrut; a 2150m high mountain lies in southeastern Turkey, known for the tomb-sanctuary built in B.C. 62 by King Antiochus I Theos of Commageme on the top of the mountain overlooking the Euphrates Valley. It is flanked by the statues of Ancient Gods of East and West, erected on both Eastern and Western side of the 50m tumulus, but heads are no longer attached to the statues that were originally about 8-10m tall. The Mount Nemrut is the place embracing the Middle of the Ground and the place that first album’s character “Mitos” passes by on the way to the Underground. This mountain is at a sacred place, which is the intersection point of the East and the West, two worlds that mankind have believed for hundreds of years.

Nemrud has gone beyond the Turkish standard rock or popular line-chorus structured songs and pushed the technical and composition limits of rock music. Besides, there are classic, jazz and avant-garde components in their compositions. The album shows the general characteristics of Progressive Rock, such as changing melodies and rhythms refraining from repetition, conceptual and abstract lyrics. The admiration of the band for the golden era of Progressive Rock and 70s reflects itself in the epical stories inspired in the albums.

Journey of the Shaman - 2010

There are 3 songs in the album which tell the story of the physical and spiritual journey of “Mitos”, a Shaman living in the steps of Central Asia, upon the message he received from the other world. The songs represent the three kingdoms in Shaman belief.

According to the shamanism, there is a direct axis attaching directly to the “Ground” where people live on, the “Underground” where dead people cross over, and the “Sky” in spiritual meaning. This axis takes place between the middle of the ground and the sky. There are 7 layers in the underground and sky kingdoms. Any shaman to reach the sky for any reason first has to go to the underground; hence no one can reach up to the sky without passing through the underground.

The recording of “Journey of The Shaman” album has been completed as analog in November 2009 at Studio 18 under the supervision of Levent Buyuk. Levent Buyuk, who has completed many successful albums so far, supported Nemrud in their album for a music genre that was never tried in Turkey before, and contributed to the album with with his talents in compositions, recordings, mix and mastering.

Ritual - 2013

Ritual is Nemrud’s second album released by Musea Records in May 2013. After the debut album of some exceptional material, they pulled it all together on 4 pieces that composed the concept album about a schizoid individual who tries to face with himself in his dreams to result with some kind of enlightenment. These four layers that Ritual is based upon symbolize the change that should occur in the old way of feeling and thinking, and the story of freeing oneself from the vulnerability to those emotions associated with old feelings and thoughts. Its purpose is the rebirth of the character; challenge ideas grounded on tradition and faith, and advanced knowledge through the spiritual journey.

The album was recorded at Papağan Studio and The Kulube in two sessions between September and October 2012. During recording sessions, some of the most retro studio techniques of our time were used. The Studio was capable of performing 24-track mixes, which offered a greater degree of flexibility. The band played together throughout the entire album and recorded in less than an hour via 1 inch tapes. Interesting a central theme for the project, the band used several experiments in a divergent attempt to spur the creative process. One exercise involved band playing on a four tracks with no reference to what the steady pulse for the music. The tempo was entirely random around an agreed chord structure and mood during the sessions.

Nemrud - 2016

Nemrud is the third album released by Rainbow45 Records in May 2016. The album was recorded in series sessions at Erekli Tunç Studio in Istanbul - Turkey and mixed by Larsen Premoli in Milan - Italy, between December 2015 and January 2016. Formed of four tracks, all the song are group performances as composures and arrengements. The album's cover was designed and illustrated by Turkish artist Betül Atlı, who had also designed the cover for various artists in early 70’s.

In the beginning there was only silence. Then out of the void appeared Nemrud, the unknowable place where death dwells, and Night. All else was empty, silent, endless, dark. Then, Love was born bringing along the beginning of order. From Love emerged Light, followed by Gods, the earth...From their union there come forth a variety of monsters and Gods
....And Nemrud splits the Earth into two parts.

From half of Earth, it creates the Euphrates for pure life, from the other half the land of man...Constructs a dwelling place for the Gods. Realizing that they will need a race of servants, It uses the blood of Lion to create the first man. This is followed by other necessary tasks, such as the creation of mountains, plants and animals.

Nemrud's world sounds perfect, and surely must be so. But we know it is not. There are such things as disease, guilt, violence, shame, claim, even death. How can this be?!
