Topic directly inspired by Trollheart's original thread, which has fallen dormant:

How it works:

Originally posted by Trollheart Trollheart wrote:

Prog Wars (NOT copyright Trollheart MMXVI) works like this: you post two albums, people vote on which they prefer, the better one (as in, the one with more votes) goes through to face the next choice, and so on. I prefer not to allow the more classic albums, ie ones against which little or nothing has a chance, so no Close to the Edge, Dark Side etc. Once the votes have been tallied and we have a clear winner, we move on to the next album, but no new suggestions until the current "battle" has been completed.

You can give your reasons for voting, if you want, though that's not mandatory, and once an album has been "defeated" it cannot be re-entered into a fresh battle. All results are final, and if you miss a battle, tough: it won't be refought.

A few new rules:
  • No albums in the PA top 100 are allowed as contestants.
  • An album is considered victorious once it has at least 10 votes and is ahead of the other album by at least a 2 point margin (i.e. if the score is 10-9, then voting will continue until one album is ahead by at least 2 points).
  • The next album to face the winner is decided by whoever mentions one first, regardless of whether they themselves cast the winning vote.
  • If the thread has been dormant (no new votes cast) for more than 72 hours, whichever album was in the lead beforehand (even if by just one vote) is declared the winner, and the next person to post can choose the next album it will face. In the event of a tie lasting over 72 hours, whichever album was introduced as the new contestant in that round will be considered the winner, and will face the next album.
So let's kick this off with two monumental double albums:

Round One:

Magma - Magma [aka Kobaïa]

vs.

Harmonium - l'Heptade

Excellent job working with Trollhart's idea to create a well-explained great contest that can keep momentum.

I have and like both albums, but I vote for Magma's magnificent debut album, but is one of the best debuts in Prog history as far as I'm concerned. It's my favourite Magma album, and what a way to kick off a career with such a double album.

The Magma debut is splendid, possibly even my favourite Magma album I've heard so far, but I'll have to go with Harmonium for sentimentality's sake.

Gotta love that debut from the French asylum. Jazz rock from outer space meets your pants, swiiiing!

It's been 72 hours right? Someone can replace Harmonium now if they want.

In that case, the victorious Kobaia will go on to face Herbie Hancock's masterful Sextant.

Sextant is my least favorite entry in the Mwandishi trilogy, but it still takes this one with ease
