Sincerely, ELP was way more talented in the keyboards department - but Greenslade made much more memorable melodies. I prefer Greenslade, while realizing that ELP was vitally necessary for the history of the world.

Greenslade are cool. Can include the first Greenslade solo also from 1976. It has 2 members of the band while Lawson and McCullough planned to leave anyway. I like to treat it as their 5th album. As for ELP, they pretty much stunk by 1974. There was some cheese setting in on Trilogy then after that they were a write off apart from parts of Karnevil.

Greenslade failry comfortably. 5 worthy albums

Greenslade-2nd fave
Beside manners
Spyglass-my fave
Time and tide
Cactus Choir

ELP had 3 worthy albums

ELP
Tarkus
Trilogy

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Interesting poll.
For me, the GREENSLADE album Bedside Manners...... is more 'special' to me than anything ELP ever did. But overall, ELP takes the slice of this pie.
Example : Drum Folk vs. Tank..............

I voted Greenslade (despite the dodgy vocals) because I actually prefer the keyboards. Melodic beats exhibitionist for me.

ELP is in my top 10.  They're the band that typical vacillates between #7 and #8 with King Crimson for me.

Greenslade might be in my top 1500. Maybe.

Greenslade for me.......while I think the first ELP is an awesome debut and hard to beat (and Emerson ultimately a better keyboard man),  ...as several have already said the melodies and songs by Greenslade are more interesting.
There is a unique feel to the Greenslade albums.

ELP - one of the most exciting, innovative and gifted bands ever whose appeal reached far beyond prog.

I'll definitely go with Greenslade since I've never voted for ELP in a poll here.

Definitely not my opinion.

Heck, I wouldn't say there's a better melody anywhere than the melody of "Trilogy" for example.

Emerson had a natural knack for great melodies, but his thorough grounding in the music of composers like Copland, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky had an important influence on him, too.

Greenslade is not that good. They might have two passable records, but the rest of their discography is way behind most pop acts of the time. I know a lot of prog fans are in the mood/ambience/short song/direct lyrics period brought back by Porcupine Tree, and vote accordingly.... but that's not the essence of prog rock, and I'd rather have epics, weird time sig changes and virtuosity. ELP is light years beyond Greenslade, a much better band in every respect.
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

You mean he had a great knack for stealing melodies from the classics......LOL...the same way that Zep did for the blues.

btw...the 'pop' songs that actually made them money and sold albums  were written by Lake.  Wink

ELP is half the reason why people call prog pomptious and pretentious. Most prog isn't like this at all.

I hate comparing 2 great bands like this!...  To me, ELP had classical influences while Greenslade were more traditional 70s prog and quite unique...

Greenslade for me.  I'm a huge fan of Dave Greenslaade with his own style. The same goes to Keith Emerson.
