Topic: 30 of your favorite Space Rock songs Posted: April 09 2017 at 03:19 |
List me 30 of your favorite Space Rock songs, no order necessary, and one song per band.
If you can't do thirty give me twenty. If not twenty I'm disappointed and give me ten. If not ten I don't want to associate with you, and you need medical help .
Songs come and go, and swap places on this list quite often... and I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I've forgotten about or not heard.
1. Acid Mothers Temple And The Cosmic Inferno - Om Riff From The Cosmic Inferno
2. Amon Duul II (German group) - Yeti (Improvisation)
3. Amon Duul II (British group) - One Moment Of Anger Is Two Pints Of Blood
4. Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come - Time Captives
5. Ash Ra Tempel - Amboss
6. Billy Thorpe - Children Of The Sun
7. Birchville Cat Motel - 55000 Flowers For The Hero
8. Boredoms - 7 (Boriginal)
9. Christine 23 Onna - Drive To Crystal Planet
10. Church Of Misery - Hymn Of The Satanic Empire
11. Davenport - At The Foot Of Zodiac Mountain
12. Earthless - Sonic Prayer
13. Far East Family Band - Parallel World
14. Flower Travellin' Band - Satori Part II
15. Gong - Master Builder
16. Guru Guru - Space Ship
17. Hawkwind - You Shouldn't Do That
18. I.E.M. - Untitled 1
19. Kraftwerk - Heavy Metal Kids
20. Kyuss - Asteroid
21. Les Rallizes Denudes - The Night Collectors
22. Maat Lander - The Birth Of Maat's Galaxy
23. Nurse With Wound and Stereolab - Simple Headphone Mind
24. Pelt - Hippy War Machine
25. Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive
26. Skull Defekts - Peer Amid

Got desperate at the end and included a couple of purely ambient pieces. Calling some of these space rock might be stretching it, but they certainly all have spacey qualities. I'm sure I'll remember 17 groups I forgot about later.

Great lists so far. Nice to see Sun Araw included. Here is my take. 1. Hawkwind - Down Through the Night (from Space Ritual) 2. Ash Ra Tempel - Amboss 3. Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive (don't know which version to choose) 4. UFO - Star Storm 5. Manuel Göttsching - Echo Waves 6. The Cosmic Jokers - Galactic Joke 7. Zacht Automaat - Ancaster Heights 8. DOM - Dream (though it's hard to pick one from this excellent) 9. Lard Free - Spirale Malax 10. Heldon - In the Wake of King Fripp 11. Gong - Master Builder 12. Cluster - Im Süden 13. Ashra - Sunrain (pretty sneaky here including Manuel Göttsching under four different names here, eh?) 14. Sand - Old Loggerhead 15. Guru Guru - Ooga Booga (hard to pick just one from them) 16. Bruce Haack - Super Nova 17. The Orb - Pomme Fritz (Meat 'n Veg) 18. Popol Vuh - In den Gärten Pharaos 19. You - E-Night 20. Galactic Explorers - Ethereal Jazz
I think that's it for me. An interesting thing that I'm finding out while doing this list is that odd gap in me between how much I love space rock and cosmic music and how little I have in mind when asked for 30 of my favorite tracks. There are so many great bands I love and would love to include, but do not know any particular piece by well enough to say that it's among my favorites. Also shows me how little I come back to albums, even if I like them. Oh well, I guess that will come with age and time. Listening to Code III's Planet of Man for the first time at the moment - so good.

I do like that Bardo Pond track a lot, good call. Also nice to see VDO, they didn't even cross my mind. Sweat Your Cheeses is a great album.
Also I think you meant The Flying Luttenbachers - Stream Of Needles?

Waht!? Only 19!? You disappoint me .
I had totally forgotten about The Embryo, that's a good one.
Also thanks for the reminder that I had never listened to that Dashiell Hedayatt album, I'd seen it consistently creep up and up on the top psych albums, but never got around to checking it out. I just listened to it though, and holy smokes , f**king love. Cielo Drive is fantastic, love how everything is held together throughout most of the song by that bass.

Solid list, Star Storm is a great track, that whole album is underrated.
I love that Bruce Haack album, super wacky and totally out there, didn't even think about though when making my list, Program me is probably my favorite track.
Glad to find someone else who likes Sun Araw, I've only recently been getting into his music. The Beach Head album and Ancient Romans album are probably my favorites at the moment, though I haven't really disliked anything I've heard from him yet.

Oh yeah, that UFO album was pivotal in my musical development. It blew me away when I first listened to it a few years ago (I still didn't know prog almost at all back then). That's when I really became interested in cosmic music overall. Bruce Haack is a great musician. You put it well, it is indeed "super wacky and totally out there." Sun Araw is one of my favorite modern musicians. Ancient Romans is probably my favorite, but I also very much like Beach Head, On Patrol, and Belomancie. His newest release from March, The Saddle of the Increate, is also pretty nice, although not as spacey as he gets.

I haven't listened to Saddle yet, that's something I'll get around to eventually. On Patrol hasn't grabbed me yet, I really only like Ma Holo, Deep Cover and Holodeck Blues so far. Belomancie is nice and out there, much more avantgarde than anything else I've heard from him. The Phynx is a great release and Heavy Deeds is pretty good too.
