And now, a thread on what I feel was a transitional album for Triumvirat; 1977's concept album Pompeii.
In the midst of the creation of it, former Triumvirat musician/singer/songwriter Helmut Koellen died on May 3rd, 1977, having been found in his enclosed garage, succumbing to carbon monoxide fumes while listening to music on his car's cassette deck.
This was a great loss for all of Triumvirat's fans and his fellow musicians, as Helmut was such an important and integral part of the Rat's appeal and success as a band, but Juergen Fritz forged on, and later that year, came Pompeii. Barry Palmer returned on vocals, and Passport musicians Dieter Petereit on bass, and Curt Cress on drums, were recorded as well as Juergen Fritz on keyboard.
I do like this record, and it is a convincing concept, but it was not as great as it's predecessors, and I feel signaled the beginning of a transition to what would later be a total rejection of Triumvirat's signature progressive rock sound.
Still, given that, it is a worthwhile listen. What are other's feelings?

I like it actually better than its two predecessors, which I admit I haven't heard in a while.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I spin this album frequently, after finding a really nice vinyl version last year. Did not know that about Helmut.....

I'm not a Triumvirat fan in general but I think this one works very well; surely all the instrumentalists and Palmer do excellent jobs, the less proggy songs are tasteful and well done, and it's a well balanced mix between complex and accessible.

I have heard that Helmut was listening to demos of a solo album he was working on while he breathed his last breath...
