Keep in mind they don't have to be jazzy or mellow or even sound remotely like SD. I just am looking for a "fair fight." Which of these(or maybe another band)do you think stands a chance against the mighty Steely Dan. Please try not to chose a band or artist that is one of the big five since they would probably not stand a chance.

Also, I want to encourage others to glean the results of this poll and take it upon yourselves to put SD up against the ones with the most votes.

The Doobie Brothers (or Fleetwood Mac or The Allman Brothers Band)...

Or on second thought, I'll vote from your list for the Pot Head Pixies (which is Gong for any who don't know).

Opeth, Steven Wilson or Zappa - I don't know why I think any of those could be interesting, but I do. Gong among the ones in the poll probably.

My first thought on seeing this topic was Magma. Musically, Zappa would be an interesting option, though I expect that Zappa would easily win.

Blue Öyster Cult is great, and I would endorse this suggestion. As for the greatest BOC from the USA, imo, that would be KFC's BoC (Bucket of Chicken). Maybe Buckethead could feature in a battle of the buckets.

KFC has some kind of new "hot fritos chicken sandwich" which sounds gastrically devastating for people with heartburn issues.

I think I will avoid it. Maybe then can compete with Burger King's Flamin' Hot Mac n' Cheetos.

I think more than any of these polls I'd like the participants here to post against how many of the listed artists Steely Dan would win/draw/lose for them.
And even if nobody else does it, I do it: For me...
Steely Dan would win against 4
Steely Dan would draw with 4
Steely Dan would lose aganst 7 of these.

Roxy Music was my first thought, so I voted for them. However, some of the other options mentioned deserve a chance as well: Supertramp, Strawbs, and Blue Oyster Cult especially. The Doobies and Fleetwood Mac are also good choices but since they are not listed on the site, I would discount them. I find it very interesting how many musicians involved with Steely became part of the Doobie Brothers. This, of course, facilitated a major change in the Doobie's sound - from good-time rockers to slick pop.

When you mentioned starting this thread in the thread that I started, I thought of ELO (who is not in the list).
