while on the subject of folk/symphonic tinged groups, how about your 8 favorite Strawbs songs.  Don't worry about length, etc.. But only 1 track per album. Lots to choose from!

New World
Witchwood, alternate The Hangman and the Papist
The Life Auction, alternate Ghosts
Tears and Pavan
Hanging In The Gallery, alternate The Golden Salamander
Hero and Heroine
Beside The Rio Grande
Ringing Down The Years

Very hard for me with only one from a couple, as you can see....and I actually could do more from some of my favourite recordings...also love Blue Angel from Two Weeks Last Summer (really, that whole first side), but this was asking about The Strawbs, as The Strawbs.

yes the Two Weeks last Summer version of Blue Angel remains my favorite.  If you have the Taste of Strawbs box set you will see that it has a version that was recorded around the time of Deep Cuts but shelved.  And of course there was another version from the Blue Angel album.  They performed it with orchestra at the 50th.  But honestly the best version I ever heard was totally acoustic in Toronto in 1984, just Cousins and Willoughby.  Unbelievable

Just one of the most hauntingly gorgeous songs ever written.  So poetic.  So sensitive.  It certainly could stand the completely stripped down version of just the two of them (Cousins and Willoughby).

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Just 8 songs? Not possible for me. How about a double album? Big smile
