We move on to vote for the next place. All previous votes are reset at that point (they are not carried over from previous thread). Voting is closed. No. 2 song is... Firth of Fifth !!! 01. Firth of Fifth. 36.5 pts [5;10] 02. The Cinema Show. 26.5 pts [5;7] 03. The Musical Box. 22 pts [2;7] 04. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight. 18 pts [4;4] 05. So which one is it?! Some fifteen votes in. Hoping to get twice more in a few days - it's a very close race indeed. Also much more interesting than #1 because at least six songs got nice scores so far. I'd also like to give some reasoning behind my votes. The Cinema Show. Perhaps the most airy and delicate 12-string intro in Genesis catalogue. Very captivating lyrics about Tiresias myth. Melodies and general feel of the song are quintessential sounds of SEBTP: intricate, dreamy, picturesque, with shades of yellow and ochre. I think Steve Hackett did a great job with limiting himself to ornaments and tiny, pixilated solos, setting the stage for Tony Banks in his prime performance. Heavy load of awesome melodies and smooth transition to Aisle of Plenty are definitely highlights of the album. Firth of Fifth. It strikes with genius instantly, no time wasted for gradual development. Not a weak moment for almost ten minutes. If The Cinema Show was Tony Banks' landmark piece, this might be Steve Hackett's finest performance on the album, or even of whole career in the band. Very refined, intelligent phrasing, this music takes you places and never gets old. Can-Utility and the Coastliners. Or: how to wrap up a dozen great ideas under six minutes. Nobody questions Genesis songwriting skills (on Progarchives), but it truly is amazing how much they progressed in 2-3 years. I think it's one of the perfect Genesis songs, they've got everything right this time. |
