Made In Japan, though a great Live album, I find is overated.
The MkI line-up is my favourite, though Gillan and Glover added more fuel to the uncontrollable fire. It fizzled out a bit with Coverdale / Hughes.

I hate smoke on the water too, but only if my boat catches fire. Smile

Okay here is my take.

5. Burn
File it under GOAT Openings in Rock. If anyone had doubts whether DP will survive Gillan and Glover departures, here's the answer...
4. Fools
Maybe a favorite track from criminally underrated Fireball. Everyone is hating on Anyone's Daughter, but nobody takes notice of fantastic B side, with Fools leading the charge. In terms of atmosphere, it's one of their best ever. What a shame the band moved away from Fireball material rather quickly.
3. Hard Lovin' Man
Deep Purple In Rock is intense AF, at least by 1970 standards, and this song drives the point home.
2. Highway Star
Pace, vitriol, rock. If 1 out of 10 "rock" bands had this much cojones, the world would be a better place.
1. Child in Time
It has to be somewhere up here, huh? It's simply a sensational tune, one of rock defining moments.

I have a soft spot for Deep Purple's formative years as well as 1980s, up to The Battle Rages On..., but after Blackmore's departure they lost much appeal. I mean, this whole band is about Blackmore and how his riffs/leads/solos coalesce with Jon Lord's amazing sound and Paicey artillery barrage.

That's why Burn is much more interesting than anything from Morse era. Sorry!

Yay, glad I helped Hard Lovin' Man make the top five Paul. It's an amazing track with a relentless galloping bass and drums rhythm (I've always thought they took this from Rondo by the Nice), snarling Hammond, a great guitar solo and Gillan's banshee wails.

Thanks! A first place (6 point) vote always helps to give a song a bump up the Top 5 charts. Smile
