I wondered if there were any songs which would, like Spirit Crusher, be just plain technical death metal, but with a hint of a jazzy-proggy bass line at a point in a song, in fact I love it when it happens.

Recommendations are welcomed!

Cos the answer could be in your mind
Maybe one cut and we’ll find
We’re just a wavelength behind

But we are entwined

And I know what you need

Death at that time was kind of its own thing; my favorite extreme metal band of all time.

What you're hearing is part Control Denied/Death at that last leg.

Check out Control Denied "The Fragile Art of Existence" for very similar guitar work, albeit traditional heavy metal/power metal vocals.

i recommend you

Atheist - All their albums (technical death metal with a lot jazzy parts)
Martyr - "Warp Zone" and "Hopeless Hopes" they are incredible, those canadians are influenced a lot by Chuck Schuldiner
Vuvr - "Pilgrimage" they are from Czech republic, incredible jazz fusion - tech death metal
Wayd - "Decadence" and "Barriers", experimental technical death metal with jazz influence, they are from Slovakia

And one of my favorites, Demilich and their only work "Nespithe", not jazzy as the other bands but incredible techical/avant garde death metal

I second Atheist.

Also, check out Pestilence "Spheres" (1993) for a more 70's synth prog induced vibe. That's one of my favorites. Album gets trashed so hard; it's a gem!

Gorguts is a bit heavier, but everything from Erosion on is absolute top tier musicianship.
