I have the 4 classic ELP albums ELP,Tarkus, BSS and Trilogy. I love them to pieces. Probably 4 of my all time favourite albums. However it seams that ELP sort of didnt achieve much more than this??

What I'm asking is I'm desperate to listen to further ELP and I want to know what is best live album/video/studio album other than the 4 listed above?

Well no doubt you must have the great live album Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends ladys and gentlemen: Emerson, Lake & Palmer!!! one of my all time favorite live labums right under LIVE AT LEEDS -The Who, wich is the best live album ever.

And alltho my least favorite ELP album Pictures at an Exibition is allso a must have, but start with The show that never end and get blown away

You also need the live triple album they released from their '73 World Tour 'Welcome back my friends to the......' you can guess the rest. Starts off with Hoedown played at 500mph and just keeps on going.

Don't know about the CD version, but the LP had the 3 LPs held in place by the Letters E L and P, which broke off after you opened the sleeve a few times. Typical ELP I guess, grand designs, great vision but hasn't lasted that well over time...

Get "Pictures..." recommended earlier, and then start to hunt the videos of their early performances!

Pictures At An Exhibition: best live-album they did, very energetic(the Welcome Back My Friends live-album has poor sound quality).

Works vol.1: also a good studio-album. Every member has a solo side and there's one group side. Their most mayestic, ambitious and eclectic one.

Emerson, Lake & Powell: a studio album with Cozy Powell(Whitesnake and many others) on drums. A very strong effort(especially for a 80's record). With spectacular keyboardwork.

Black Moon: their last accessible studio-effort, with quite a few strong tracks on it.

The King Biscuit Flower Presents ELP: a good double live cd.

Video/DVD:

Beyond The Beginning: sort of greatest hits DVD with a 1 hour documentary.

Masters From The Vault: a performance from 1971.

To echo other's recommendations - I would pick

On CD: "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show that Never Ends" includes live versions of all of BSS, plus Takus (with a great version of Aquatarkus - I mean really great!) and some other stuff;

On DVD - "Masters from the Vault" - if you can get it - a concert from Belgium I think from the earlier days of the band.

Apart from Pictures I'd go for Works Volume 1 - the first ELP album I got into and much underrated IMHO.

If you like Emerson's keyboard style you should love Pirates and the Piano Concerto, and the extended version of Fanfare has an enjoyably distorted synth solo.

Greg Lake's side has three good songs and Carl Palmer's has a version of Tank which I think is better than the original (it loses the drum solo for a start!). Food For Your Soul and LA Nights are also good.

On DVD, I agree the best is the Masters From The Vaults 1971 concert.

For live stuff the best I've heard is The Original Bootlegs Volume 1 (the red one) which concentrates on their peak years in the early 70s (it has an awesome version of Pictures from Long Beach 1972).

I concur wholeheartedly....

but then don't be lured into the Miasma which are Works Vols 1 & 2, unless you are a real die hard fan, like Snow Dog...

Agree with both of you. Pictures at an exibition on video  is a must have for early ELP works.

Yes, your essentially right. Besides Pictures and the live album, there's not much else that's worth repeated listenings. And it's too bad that they couldn't get it together and brainstorm how to restart the creative energy they had at that time.

Oh well, they are great albums and, frankly, they should be rated higher on the site's list, at least higher than anything by Jethro Tull, Dream Theatre or Marillion. But some injustices never get corrected.

I suggest checking out some Italian prog, some of those bands' music has the excitement of those early ELP albums.
