I was searching something in the Prog Related section and though about the fact that it shelters some legendary bands, Led Zeppelin among which, so I asked myself: What makes them prog, which of the band members is the key for the progressive aspect in their sound.

For me, it is clearly JPJ - heavenly bass and keys that elevate the band's sound and help them reach places that otherwise they wouldn't have gone to, an irreplaceable man (well, everyone in this band is irreplaceable LOL) but he had the spirit of this kind of music, a spirit that was not necessarily propagating itself in the other band members' playing/performances.

So, what do you think? Which of these four men progs the most?

Zep's Mellotron Meister JPJ, of course.

John Paul Jones, of course. His association with Robert Fripp makes this poll a no-brainer.

JPJ by far. I even saw him open up for King Crimson. That tells you all you need to know.

Another vote JPJ. He is listed solo in PA as heavy prog. His solo album Zooma is a great instrumental album. Plant solo is also in PA as crossover prog.

I would've gladly pressed a button tagged "Zepp do prog". The entire unit sounds pretty convincing to me in No Quarter (the unmodified version of TSRTS)

JPJ - especially considering the collaborative work (as artist and producer) with Diamanda Galás.

My first thought was JPJ but to the extent Zeppelin plays prog ( or some prog related stuff) that would probably be credited to the one that writes most of the music so now I'm thinking Jimmy Page.  More as a song writer then a guitar player.

Probably the guy who played the Mellotron flutes on "Stairway." Just a hunch.

JPJ, but JP without the extra J could also Prog well.

Here he is outside of Zep:

If one looks at diversity of musical direction, risk-taking, new areas of exploration, it's really gotta be Plant.
