FRANCIS MONKMAN is a
widely acclaimed English musician that has been involved in progressive rock,
classical music, and film scores as a composer. FRANCIS MONKMAN is both a
keyboardist and guitarist, switching between instruments throughout his musical
career. In addition, he is a founding member of both the progressive rock bands
CURVED AIR and SKY while also contributing with various other bands such as
RENAISSANCE, AL STEWART, and BRIAN ENO. Due to FRANCIS MONKMAN'S varying
musical styles throughout his career, his musical sound is somewhat hard to pin
down. This causes his discography to always sound new yet familiar within his
prog tendencies. FRANCIS MONKMAN released Energism in 1978 under Brutton Music
to critical acclaim by reviewers. In 2021, progressive rock band YES got into
controversy for using multiple parts of a track found on the album in their
track The Ice Bridge off The Quest. In 1981, The Long Good Friday Soundtrack
was a surprising success and a truly brilliant film score for FRANCIS MONKMAN
that was composed for the British gangster film of the same name starring Bob
Hoskins. Fans of both VANGELIS and TANGERINE DREAM should surely enjoy a vast
amount of his solo career. But due to his vast styles, there should something for
everyone. Album Title Energism (Released in 1978) 1. The Dawn Of An Era (Realisation Of Unlimited Possibility) (3:10) 2. The Endurance Of Man (Expenditure Of Energy) (2:58) 3. However, I currently believe Electronic Prog would fit his overall musical style the best while I would also consider him being Symphonic Prog and Crossover Prog.

Thank you, I'll take this to our team. I listened to Energism yesterday (because of the Ice Bridge controversy), and based on that I would vote NO for Symphonic. But I haven't heard any of his other works... |

I can definitely see that, I actually think he might fit best in Electronic Prog. Therefore, I updated the title of the post to reflect that. I know his music is surely prog, but the exact genre is somewhat inconclusive in my eyes. Thanks for the suggestion!

It'll probably be a Long Good Friday before Francis Monkman is added to ProgArchives, but just on the off-chance that he is added, I agree that he's best-suited to Progressive Electronic.

I'm surprised he's not already listed here. Possibly Sonja Kristina should be here too, but in her case there are probably similarities to the absence of Annie Haslam, in that Sonja's solo projects are not overly proggy.

I would've suggested Francis Monkman & Sonja Kristina for inclusion on PA too, but given my past record for having suggested artists rejected (including Annie Haslam), I didn't think the chances were good for either of them being added, although on a brighter note, at least Darryl Way and Darryl Way's Wolf are here.

^ We tend to think the same way on these matters, but are no match for the higher powers.

Welcome to PA by the way! I appreciate your thoughtful post, as I was not familiar with Monkman until the recent "Ice Bridge" dust-up!
