Doing this series in a sort of random order (not sure how much of a series this will be if I and/or others continue with it), but started with the year 2015.
In the last topic (for 2015) I asked people to be minimal with mentions per post -- there's hardly any harm if people mention the same but I had wanted to avoid "laundry lists", narrowing it down to those that are really special to us, and because I was doing it with youtube embeds, it was to minimise the embeds per post. I now say feel free to mention as many as you like and as many forms of media as you like (albums, books, film, TV series....), but embedding lots of videos causes problems for many (so maybe keep that to a maximum of four per post, even then that will cause problems for some). My interest is partially in seeing if there is an apparent correlation between our tastes in different arts, how that may reflect on ones personality and more generally just seeing what people like, maybe making personal connections with others through shared tastes, maybe discovering some worthwhile or interesting to oneself things along the way, and just sharing what we like with others. 2013 is quite a weak year for music in my collection apparently (I'm not that organised so I may be neglecting ones) but here are some things I dig: Album in PA: Kosmischer Läufer - The Secret Cosmic Music of the East German Olympic Program 1972-83: Volume One I love KL and it was mentioned by Saper in the last poll. The artist came up with an interesting backstory to go with the "history" of the music. Album out of PA: Cristobal Tapia de Veer - Utopia (OST) The soundtrack of one of my very favourite shows off the last decade. Wont bother posting something from the soundtrack as I'm listing the show itself. Film: Under the Skin (horror/ sci-fi) I found this rather surreal film very powerful and ultimately moving and poignant. The comments I have seen on it have been divisive. TV show (first season/series): Utopia This British show received an Amazon US remake, which I started on but didn't finish. It's hard when the original affected one so much to appreciate remakes commonly, and it's a rare remake that lives up the the original, especially when it's a remake of another countries show. It can be very violent and disturbing. I was upset that it only lasted two series/ seasons, and signed more than one petition to have it continued. Another of my very favourite shows that kicked off in 2012 was In the Flesh, which also sadly only got two series and that really needed a third. Will post another trailer for that: And we had the excellent series two of the British anthology series Black Mirror (White Bear being my favourite episode). Love to see what you liked from the year. :) And you don't need to mention one of each of these, you can cover as many or as few "arts" from the year as you like. My favourite 2013 album in this site's archives:
Ayreon - The Theory of Everything A part from it: My favourite 2013 album not in the archives: Amorphis - Circle Here's my favourite song off of it (it has a video clip too, but I prefer the audio only): My favourite 2013 movie [I don't like such (WtH is "such"?) movies normally, but I did enjoy this a lot.] is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and here's its trailer: I'm not much of a TV series guy, but Utopia's first season was excellent, except the ending. For my perception, there was an incredibly "stupid" thing there. Greg, you should remember we talked via PM about this.) |

Since they're on PA, my pick for 2013 will be die anarchistische abendunterhaltung... From their album Eight Definitions: Delete Alt and Undo: My non prog choice could have been another Belgium act, Kaboom Karavan, but it would maybe be a bit too similar to DAAU, so I choose De Staat with their album Icon. From this album the last track, The Inevitable End: And 2013 was an interesting year for cinema, even with some good French films: - L'inconnu du lac by Alain Guiraudi - L'écume des jours by Michel Gondry (if you like "cheap" special effects...) - Michael Koolhaas by Arnaud de Pallières - La Vénus à la fourrure by Roman Polanski I was also thinking of Jia Zhan-ke's film A Touch of Sin, but the film that stood out for me in 2013 was the first feature film by Jem Cohen, more known for his experimental films and documentaries (and video clips for R.E.M.): Museum Hours: |

Thank you Ozgur and Kees. I checked out the various embeds. With Kees that all seems very much in my wheelhouse (I know early DAAU albums much more) and with Ozgur it's interesting being different from my usual fare (of course we do both like Utopia)
Yes, I was not that satisfied with how certain things involving Jessica Hyde were handled/ the ending. I might want to watch that show again at some time. On another Utopia note, I have noticed the writer/ creator of the UK British Utopia drama, Dennis Kelly. not getting credit as creator for the US one despite Gillian Flynn's Amazon reboot being based on it. As I read at Hollywood reporter, "Flynn will be credited as the lone creator on Utopia on which she will also exec produce and serve as showrunner." They did give him an executive producer credit as a courtesy despite not being involved in the US show at all. Apparently the US remake was cancelled after one season -- think they would have done better involving Dennis Kelly (at least he got two seasons). I'll stick with the British original. On a David Kelly note, I loved his six part series, The Third Day (especially for the first three with Jude Law) which just came out last year, methinks. It's very folk horror-ish. I watched it on HBO. |

The prog department is a bit thin. Here's zoviet france, arguably not really rock, if progressive for sure. In the not listed on PA category I'm spoiled for choice. I go with some fun art pop by Everything Everything. The film category is hard; I love the cinema but have hardly any orientation what was in what year. Anyway, some research shows that Farhadi did The Past in 2013. |

I love the anarchistische Abendunterhaltung by the way - I had heard their name but didn't know how they sound.

Prog
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing (and other stories) not sure I can comment on that one much other than to say that it's a perfect re-imagining of seventies symphonic prog. He is a clever chappie but best not talk about the more recent stuff lol. Non prog I couldn't seem to find anything. Perhaps it was such a good year for prog I didn't need anything else! Films struggled to find much but I did enjoy Red 2 mainly for the performance of Mary-Louise Parker who steals the film (the cast includes Bruce Willis , Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins!) . Riddick , Oldboy and Gravity were also pretty good but nothing really hit me that hard. TV Ray Donovan. I enjoyed this a whole lot right to the end. Liev Schreiber will never get a better role and a mention for Eddie Marsan as his brother dealing with Parkinsons. Just a great show that remained consistent throughout. |

^ I haven't watched the American remake of the Korean Park Chan-wook film, Oldboy from 2003, but I love the original. Actually, I started on the US version, but I had already seen the original and rarely do I like the US remakes/ re-imaginings (a reason why I didn't watch the Amazon Utopia), especially when I already know the original.
Speaking of Korean directors, another film I liked very much from 2013 was Snowpiercer (directed by Bong Joon-ho, and I'm a fan of him and Park Chan-wook). I actually saw that film and Under the Skin on the same day as I recall. It features the much missed by me, John Hurt, as well as Tilda Swinton and Ed Harris. Many will recognise Song Kang-ho from Parasite, and I loved him in The Host. Edited by Logan - November 26 2021 at 09:36 |

^ 3 amazing actors you list there.
I have watched Under The Skin but it left me a bit cold. I hated the ending totally, just too brutal. I'll give Scarlett Johansson great credit for doing a weird sci-fi art movie in Scotland. Apparently a lot of improvised stuff and the stories of when she was recognised by various strangers all thinking 'what the hell is Scarlett Johansson doing in Glasgow' are amusing. Sorry but just not for me although occasionally I do like an art house sci fi film. Another Earth (2011) springs to mind especially. I looked that up and didn't realise that Brit Marling was in it and also produced it (she is well known for the Netflix show The OA) . That's one you may like to check out perhaps.
