Tangerine Dream Team: Passed and Presence

CONRAD SCHNITZLER   (1937-2011)   One of the original TD trio (alongside Edgar Froese & Klaus Schulze) on Tangerine Dream's first album, Electronic Meditation, experimental musician Conrad Schnitzler (gesundheit!) is Germany's answer to Brian Eno, having also been a founder member of experimental band Kluster (not to be confused with Krautrock band Cluster) together with Hans Roedelius & Dieter Moebius, who Brian Eno has also worked with in the past. Conrad Schnitzler's experimental albums won't be to everyone's taste, but at least they're Con-sistent, with the vast majority of Con-rad's album titles Con-sisting of endless variations of words beginning with the syllable "Con". Smile

So you listened to all of these? You are really crazy (which isn't meant in a bad way).

I only listened to some Schnitzler material because of your poll series (probably I had heard something back in the 80s or 90s but didn't follow up on it). I do like some of it, it has a minimalist experimental quality, and some of it works quite well, although there is a risk of getting bored/annoyed listening to too much of it.

No, that would've been purgatory. I only listened to brief snippets of all of those Schnitzler albums listed above. Life is too short to listen to all of Conrad Schnitzler's albums in full, bearing in mind minimalist experimental music is really not my cup of tea. Disapprove

^ Froese also included some new songs on the compilation album Beyond The Storm. https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=8991

I hadn't realised that he had recorded a number of albums that were essentialy solo albums but marketed as Tangerine Dream. There are also the bunch of 2005 re-recordings of his best early material (up to Pinnacles) which seem to have decent ratings. I've not listened to any of them. I feel the need for a new playlist coming on!

I suspect releasing Edgar Froese's solo albums under the Tangerine Dream name was a clever marketing ploy to sell more albums, in the same way as Roger Waters' The Final Cut was released as a Pink Floyd album and Tony Iommi's Seventh Star was released as a Black Sabbath album, to give just two other examples. Smile

When it comes to TD, I own everything from Phaedra (74) to Tyger (87), save a few OST's; 20 albums in all and I find that enough. I may in time get to know the more recent stuff and applaud you for your dedication to the cause Paul, but there is just soooo much of it!!

Thanks Jared. I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever reach the end of Tangerine Dream's humungous discography with new albums coming out almost as fast as I can listen to them and with well over one hundred albums released in just one amazing decade (2000-2009) alone. At least now, I'll have more time to explore Tangerine Dream's solo works, having just spent a whole month listening to Klaus Schulze's albums and with Peter Baumann coming up next. Thumbs Up

you've got more patience than me! I think I just really like their post Phaedra decade and I'll confess, for a long time I stopped at 'Poland' but quite by chance, I heard Green Desert, so splashed out on the 4 disk set 'Blue Years', which takes me up to '87. GD is certainly the pick of those disks; I'm not as enthralled to their 80's sound, but I think I've just got enough of their music now; there's too much else to listen to besides. I think if they'd had gone on and maybe released one every two or three years like normal artists, I may have persisted... but it's all too much!! LOL

A few post-1987 standouts you must hear:

Miracle Mile (1989 soundtrack)
Goblins Club (1996 album)
Oasis (1997 soundtrack (1997 soundtrack)
Kyoto (2005 archival release of music composed entirely by Edgar & Johannes before the latter departed the band)
Blue Dawn (2006, as above, but by Edgar & Ralf Wadephul)
Views from a Red Train (2008 album, mostly Edgar)
Machu Picchu (2012, entirely by Edgar)
The Cinematographic Score: GTA 5 (2014 soundtrack, all Edgar with contributions from Thorsten Quaeschning)

A full concert from 1988 was remastered and released in 2003 as the 2CD, Rockface. Also a must. It was reissued in 2009, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

Blue Dawn is long OOP, but that's a winner. It should be on YouTube.

There are a few more tracks exclusive to Edgar's Ambient Highway series, too.

Tangerine Dream Team: Passed and Presence

STEVE SCHROYDER      One of the early, almost forgotten members of Tangerine Dream, Steve Schroyder has a small but important place in Tangerine Dream's history as one of the original TD trio (alongside Edgar Froese & Chris Franke) on Tangerine Dream's second album: Alpha Centauri. Steve Schroyder's star shone brightly as a solo artist too, recording three albums of "Kosmiche Musik" before trance-forming into a four-on-the floor dancehall star. Smile

Hi,

And some of the best is finally showing up ... the live stuff in the evenings for the past 2 or 3 years is all excellent, and their guests in them are also great. Steve Reich and Nick Beggs and a couple of others are excellent, and showing something that has not been there feeling wise, since the Edgar Froese days ... a certain "freedom" instead of the music being too metallic for my tastes. It flows a lot better being improvised as these shows tell us ... and they need to be on CD.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Can I also mention Seven Letters From Tibet and Purgatorio? The latter may be my favourite TD album but should warn that it's not typical for TD featuring several classical opera singers from different countries.

Tangerine Dream Team: Passed and Presence

CHRIS FRANKE      The second of the classic TD trio (alongside Edgar Froese & Peter Baumann), Chris Franke has been with Tangerine Dream almost from the beginning, appearing on well over fifty Tangerine Dream albums,  from their second album: Alpha Centauri in 1971, right through to LiveMiles in 1988. Chris Franke moved to the Pacific Coast Highway of California in 1991, presumably because that's where the big money is, scoring music for movies and TV shows, including over fifty soundtracks alone for sci-fi series Babylon 5 (which are far too numerous to list here). Shocked

Tangerine Dream Team: Passed and Presence

PETER BAUMANN     The third member of the classic TD trio (alongside Edgar Froese & Chris Franke), Peter Baumann appeared on all of Tangerine Dream's early albums from Zeit in 1972 through to the live Encore album in 1977 before departing the band to concentrate on his budding solo career, including a thankfully brief but bizarre spell in the early 1980's as a German version of Gary Numan with his unforgettable (but not in a good way) New Wave cover version of Frank Sinatra's Strangers in the Night.  Smile

Tangerine Dream Team: Passed and Presence

MICHAEL HOENIG      The briefest blink-and-you'll miss-him member of Tangerine Dream, Michael Hoenig stood in for Peter Baumann during the Australian leg of Tangerine Dream's 1975 world tour. Michael Hoenig's stunning solo debut - Departure from the Northern Wasteland - is one of the best albums Tangerine Dream never recorded. Smile

Tangerine Dream Team: Passed and Presence

STEVE JOLLIFFE      The first voice ever heard on a Tangerine Dream album! Once we'd all recovered from the shock of hearing Steve Jolliffe's robotic vocals for the first time on Tangerine Dream's revolutionary Cyclone album in 1978, it's now rightly-regarded as a classic and has since become Tangerine Dream's sixth best-selling album of all time. Clap
