Japan has certainly been one of the countries which has gained international recognition for
their Progressive Rock bands, so let us tell each other which Japanese albums we're fond of.
Mine are:

Far East Family Band  (J) -  Nipponjin   (1975)

Flower Travellin’ Band  (J) -  Satori   (1971)

Flower Travellin’ Band   -  Made In Japan   (1972)

Osamu Kitajima  (J)  -  Benzaiten    (1976)

Stomu Yamash'ta  (J)  Come To The Edge  -  Floating Music  (1972)

Stomu Yamashta  -  Raindog  (1975)

Bi Kyo Ran  (J)  -  Bi Kyo Ran   (1982)

Bondage Fruit  (J)  -  II   (1996)

Enjoy it! Tongue

You're surely a friend of some Japanese albums, Paul, and you've been very well prepared.
Thank you very much for this extraordinary super quick post! Big smile

You could consider to remove the albums with 2 and 3 stars, and thus make it easier to see
which you're much fond of. Smile

As you probably guessed, I'm not fond of the Food Brain album or Stomu Yamashta's Red Buddha album, but apart from those two exceptions, I like all the albums in my list. I like all of the albums in your list too, apart from Bondage Fruit, obviously. Wink

If you like Osamu Kitajima's Banzeiten album, then you may like Passages II & Dragon King too, as they're even better in my view. Thumbs Up

OP: Do collaborative albums that contain only one or two Japanese band members (Stomu Yamash'ta, Hiromi Uehara) qualify as "Japanese Prog"?? Please define your terms.

an impressive list, Paul.  thank you.

do Yellow Magic Orchestra or my fave, Sadistic Mika Band fit here?  Acid Mothers Temple?
I also love solo works by other members of YMO like Hauomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, Logic System, & Sketch Show.

and along the lines of Far East Family Band was Chronicle, released on the same label. All Ears Records in the U.S.

Hi,

These two are very good. But we're missing one of the very best-known Japanese composers that even has, in his closet, an Oscar for his efforts and so many soundtracks with outstanding and beautiful music, that most rockers will NEVER listen to!

Ryuichi Sakamoto deserves more attention. And the triad of crazy mixtures of "Beauty", "Heartbeat" and "Neo Geo" should be heard, and for total newbies, maybe a course on YMO would be advisable, but they will probably think it was cheap music, that by 1978 it was worthless (how quickly we forgot Kraftwerk, then!!!) ... oh wait ... how about that thrashing workshop Acid Mothers Temple with everyone and your momma?

A few others, and there are a lot of things today that are excellent, including Mono, Ghost, Album Leaf that are also doing some far-out stuff. But one in particular would be THE SADISTIC MIKA BAND that put together 3 magnificent albums including David's least favorite song ... mamma doesn't go to parties since daddy died ... and then a sumptuous and neat "hot menu" that too many rockers have never heard. I wonder if David misses Mika, who was instead taken away by someone in Roxy Music and pretty much killed the band, but to this day, the guitarist is known for his version of one piece from that album!

I guess that listening to FOREIGN music for 45 years makes a massive difference ... you tend to not forget some of the things that you heard since then! And they are difficult to not appreciate and enjoy!

But David missing Ryuichi Sakamoto ... the shame, the shame, ohh  the horror!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^ David may have missed Sakamoto, but Drew and I both had him in our lists. It has come up before in these fora, that YMO are in PA, while Sakamoto is not. I definitely feel he is sadly lacking in PA, but even if he is not prog “enough” (of not often “enough”), there are plenty of people hereabouts who are fans. David often keeps his lists to those names who feature in PA, so it’s entirely possible he has not “missed” Sakamoto, as left him out because he is not in PA. 🤷🏻‍♂️

(I’m not a great fan of YMO, so much as what came after from Sakamoto.)
