If looking at PA's toplist for 1989, the three highest ranked albums are:

1. Cardiacs (UK) - On Land and in the Sea  -  4.38 from 173 ratings

2. Voivod (CAN) - Nothingface  -  4.26 from 353 ratings

3. Fates Warning (USA) - Perfect Symmetry  -  4.13 from 456 ratings
quality over quantity, and all kind of PopcoRn almost beyond

RYM says:

2. Marillion (UK) - Seasons End  -  3.64 from 1,585 ratings

3. Devil Doll (Slovenia) - The Girl Who Was...Death  -  3.60 from 1,168 ratings

(with popularity weighting on 4)

^ RYM's chart rundown looks much more appealing to me than PA's list, although I've yet to hear a Cardiacs album I'd want to listen to a second time. Confused

My five favourite prog albums from this year aren't included in PA's Top 27 list for 1989, so no surprise there again. Confused

Well, my is #17, and I'm still struggling a bit with Nothingface, so I can't yet really consider it as one of my faves,
but it's the highest rated 1989 album on RYM+PA, so I wouldn't mind if it also could be one of my faves. Big smile

Edit: That is btw not quite sure, as it could be another or even more Metal albums - but not Prog Metal.

One of these five is very fortunately not included at all, and I can't imagine it otherwise than it has been put on Wikipedia's timeline
by mistake. Big smile

Actually, Reflections from the Firepool is one of my very most fave Prog albums from the '80s, and ranked as #7 on RYM's
Progressive Rock chart for 1989 (with popularity weighting on 4) - and even got 3 stars from Paul. Big smile

Seasons End - Marillion's best album.

FNM probably don't have much pull with this crowd. The Real Thing isn't on par with Gretchen, either. FNM's next album, Angel Dust, became their masterwork. Both KX and FNM have devoted followings but never hit the big time because they'e just too "out there" for the mainstream.

If an explanation needed, my first search only concerned "Progressive Rock" which on RYM doesn't include any Metal - sorry.

I can only disagree strongly and counter that The Real Thing was FNM’s masterwork by some distance!!🤘😊

But I do agree that both bands were unique, and definitely deserved better….

In my opinion far from a good year in prog but if I had to say, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe.
I also have to ask why Tears for Fears - The Seeds of Love is on the list?
Been aroun' since 2007 with name gimsom but lost my email account a while back.
