OH EM GEE EXTREME METAL ON PROGARCHIVES.

I'm getting bored of the same topics here over and over again, so let's discuss something new.

There's no doubt that Devin Townsend is an absolute modern music genius with his solo work, but how about where he really started with Strapping Young Lad. Not only are they excellent music, but they have some proggy touches to them. For example, I've seen few bands make something as infectuously catchy as Love?, something as mellow as Two Weeks, something is WTF-ish as Info Dump, and then something as brutal as Home Nucleonics. There is a LOT of subtle keys work, mixing, original compositions, varying sounds, emotions, and of course, Devy's insanity.

I personally think they are progressive but not "prog". Just wanna see what else you guys think.

That's a lot ot be discovered within the Lad's stuff, you just have to get over the extreme angry metal and silly lyrics.

Variety does not equal progression. They're an interesting and often highly technical band, but I wouldn't call them progressive.

ANyways, I think they are Experimental Thrash Metal mixed with a lot of Industrial and Progressive vibes, so I would agree with you

I wonder how many of you have even listened to their latest album? It's much more mature than the previous ones, and much more adventurous.

It's surely prog related ...

Agree with mike.

Have only heard their single of 'alien' (sh*tstorm), but there is a lot of subtle interchange of guitar and keys beneath the wall of sound most of us hear.  This as well as the changes in time signature that also tends to go unnoticed at a superficial listen.  Am looking fwd to hearing the rest of the album.

Metal... Yes, first and formost.  The first word in metal is intensity.  Take the intensity of SYL work, and there are some aspects of prog there... but u do really need to focus in on it.

All of this is assuming that u agree that there is such a thing as 'progressive metal' (i'm undecided)

edible, the rest of the album is just as good. Alien truly is I think progressive...but not quite prog. I say they are almost prog though, because NOTHING else sounds like them out there. And that's rare.

They are ... horrible. One of the single worst "extreme" metal acts to ever exist, and that is putting them against Vital Remains - Dechristianize album ... (though even that has a few dedeeming factors.)
