These are the second place albums of PA's official Album of the Year events. Except for 2023, these were set as "collab" choices.
Which one, just one, would you vote for as a favourite of those you know (if applicable)?
2022: Motorpsycho - Ancient Astronauts 2021: black midi - Cavalcade 2020: Wobbler - Dwellers of the Deep 2019: Izz - Don't Panic 2018: Far Corner - Risk 2017: Accordo dei Contrari - Violato Intatto 2016: Gösta Berlings Saga - Sersophone 2015: Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. 2014: IQ - The Road of Bones 2013: Haken - The Mountain 2012: Big Big Train - English Electric (Part One) 2011: Opeth - Heritage 2010: Frogg Café - Bateless Edge 2009: maudlin of the well - Part the Second 2008: Il Bacio della Medusa - Discesa agl'inferi d'un giovane amante 2007: Robert Wyatt - Comicopera 2006: PFM - Stati di immaginazione 2005: Van der Graaf Generator - Present For comparison, here are the album winners for the years:
2022: black midi - Hellfire 2021: Shamblemaths - Shamblemaths 2 2020: Zopp - Zopp 2019: IQ - Resistance 2018: All Traps On Earth - A Drop of Light 2017: Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere 2016: David Bowie - Blackstar 2015: Anekdoten – Until All the Ghosts Are Gone 2014: Opeth - Pale Communion 2013: Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing and Other Stories 2012: Anglagard - Viljans Öga 2011: Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning 2010: Univers Zero - Clivages 2009: Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré 2008: Opeth - Watershed 2007: Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Dead Planet 2006: Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue 2005: Porcupine Tree - Deadwing ------------------------------- While I like a number of these very much, for the runners-up, black midi's Cavalcade stands out for me. |

This one is tougher, I could vote for 4-5 albums here.

All the more to enthuse about. I might go something like this. 1. black midi - Cavalcade 2. Gosta Berlings Saga - Sersophone 3. Far Corner - Risk 4. Robert Wyatt - Comicopera 5. Frogg Café - Bateless Edge 6. Motorpsycho - Ancient Astronauts 7. maudlin of the well - Part the Second I wasn't nearly as impressed with that PFM as others were at the time (that was the first year I voted in these). |

I vote for the excellent Motorpsycho album. (Not quite so keen on their 2023 offering.)

Another really good list. As a huge IZZ fan, Don't Panic got my vote, but five or six others would have been more than worthy.

I don't think I listened to that PFM album. I will try and listen to it soon.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I really like this album need to re-visit. Picked AdC as I have had it pretty much tied with the Wobbler album from that year. Flip a coin. |

Given that The Road of Bones and The Mountain are the only albums in either the winners or runner up list that I would rate above 3*, and that they're the only albums I've voted for that has made either category, it's not a hard choice to get down to the final 2.
But then it's a toss up. Today, it's IQ. Tomorrow it could have been Haken. They're both brilliant.
